Just bought brand new nuvi 760 and tested it - all good. Went to web updater site -"updated" and now the device gets to the screen "Powered by SiRFinstantfixII" etc and turns off?!?! No amount of resetting or trying the self installer will revive the beast?! Does anyone have any suggestions?
Tried the reset procedure, tried pressing every corner of screen when booting?! - some say this will get you to a master reset screen?!
Really frustration considering I'd spent the whole weekend contemplating a "best buy" so that I could use the thing tomorrow on a big trip and I've got a $700 door stop!!!! The thing hasn't even plotted a single metre of a trip! Great!
Any suggestions? |

best advice is to take it back to the shop or contact garmin - especially considering it's pretty much brand new!

Thanks for the reply MaFt. Yes you're right about returning to the store. It's just that I am committed to leaving for a weeks trip (the reason I bought the GPS!) before the store opens and will now have to wait till I return to swap. Very frustrating. Doubly so as my Navman icn510 that I've had for years failed to turn on on the weekend which was the catalyst for the new purchase!
I guess I'll have to dust off the old paper maps. At least they don't have an on/off button!
Cheers. |

Is it charged?
The USB Charger is very slow to charge. Try plugging it into the car charger and it should switch on. If it doesn't come on straight away leave charging for a minute or two and try again. |

I had exactly the same type of problem on my 660. I finally solved it by getting into maintenance mode at boot up. To do this you need to hold a firm finger on the appropriate corner of the device while you switch on and then keep your finger pressing firmly until it has finished booting and asks if you really want maintenance mode. Answer yes and then at the next screen agree to the deletion of all user data. Once I had done that I switched off and then on again normally and the 660 booted up OK. I had been really cross because my freeze was at the beginning of a 5 week holiday!
Try it again - you have nothing to lose! |

Hello to all who replied,
I've just returned from my trip and I am pleased to say that I was able to swap the device for a(nother) new one in the city of my destination from the same 'chain' store and was able to enjoy the trip after all.... Hooray!
I also must say that I have returned to an email from Garmin that said they wanted to swap my unit as well so I have to give them top marks for that.
I had enquired at the time of purchase of the original new unit as to the warranty and service of the GPSs that I was considering purchasing and am pleased to say that the advice I was given was spot on! Garmin do indeed seem to be very responsive to their customers.
Now that I am back I will try the update again... gulp. This time I will try the self installer rather than the web update to see if that makes a difference. Here's hoping all goes well.
Thanks again to alll who responded with good advice. I will post my results of the second attempt.
Cheers,

Good news! I was able to update to the latest software by using the self loading files. In fact I did 2 updates- original software to V2.6 then to V2.7. I stayed away from the web update method, although I'm still not certain that that was the cause of my original problem?!
All good so far.
Cheers for now. |
