|
|
iTIS, one of the two UK providers of RDS-TMC data services have announced a three year agreement with Garmin UK to supply data for their nüvi 2x5 range of TMC equipped navigation devices.
Garmin have previously used RAC-TrafficMaster as their chosen supplier of RDS-TMC data.
Stuart Marks, Chief Executive, ITIS Holdings said. "We are delighted to be selected by Garmin as a traffic provider and we will be working closely with them to build upon our combined leadership in traffic and navigation. ITIS real time traffic information will help Garmin’s customers avoid the jams and reach their destination quickly and stress free."
What is not clear from the announcement is whether this new deal will see Garmin UK migrate to iTIS for RDS-TMC data across every TMC equipped device or if this agreement covers new devices, or indeed if this is Garmin testing the water on the nüvi 2x5 range only. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I use TT Traffic (so ITIS) day to day and have tried previously Trafficmaster on my N95 with Orange http://www.ekmpowershop1.com/ekmps/shops/trafficmasterp/traffic-tv-7-p.asp to compare both.
I found ITIS was more informative than just the speed of traffic or the time it took to pass through a traffic hotspot as Trafficmaster displayed. (This of course could be a limitation of the software I was using to receive the Trafficmaster info). With ITIS/TomTom you at least receive info on what the incident is. An accident, congestion, roadworks etc. One good thing trafficmaster did have was the ability to view roadside CCTV cameras, although ITIS is slowly implementing this these days to one of there websites.
When I bought my 910 originally (about a year ago IIRC) I didn't think very much of traffic. Information was out of date, inaccurate, and non-existent at times. Since I've started using it again in the last few weeks I have found the quality of information and clarity of it more substantial and far clearer than before.

I have to say this could be good news, ITIS are now the major TMC provider in the UK and maybe this will result in better/more transmitters removing the black spots we currently have here in the UK. |

Hooray!! Now the Garmin mob will get the same rubbish we TomTom users are getting - they can't look down their noses at us any longer. _________________ Dennis

Yes, Dennis couldn't agree more.
Tuesday evening this week TT Traffic is suggesting a 5 minute delay at the top of the M32 to join the M4 stretching back beyond the ring road. When I got there I was the 3rd car in the queue for the traffic lights where you join the m-way.........nuff said |

I'm afraid, x20 TMC issues aside, that Garmin's RAC-TrafficMaster data wasn't much to write home about either.
I tested both side by side on a 500 mile trip recently and they were both laughably poor.
Mind you I read this morning that a German satellite is being used in a trial to monitor traffic on bottleneck sections of their autobahn's. That could be very useful technology (it uses radar so is not reliant on good weather!). and may in future augment theses systems with valuable and accurate info. _________________ Darren Griffin |

All I hope is that Garmin open it up to older Garmin Products.
I'm fed up with waiting for two green lights on my GTM21 to show it has some traffic info from TMC to register on my Nuvi!!
On the rare occasions that I get TMC info it has been fairly good - it's just that it so patchy and intermittent that you can't rely on having it when you need it ie when stuck in a jam!!!
Why can't we in the UK get a decent signal - I just drove through France and was dazzled by the twin green lights showing traffic info almost non stop on the way down to the alps.
Will this alternate supplier offer a better, more reliable signal and info stream? |

iTIS is no better in terms of signal coverage. Why its better over the water I don't know but they do have more providers albeit some are free and so data quality is not great. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Knowing the way Europe works - you'll probably find that some faceless bureaucrat has decided that here in the UK the signal can only be sent at half of a zillionth of a watt, for fear of upsetting the radio frequencies used by budgie fanciers, whilst the French operators blast it out with the amps turned up to spinal tap's eleven out of ten! |
