Hi Guys,
Have any of you early adopters of SatSync downloaded/uploaded any of the walks listed on www.walkingworld.com??
If so, what steps / software did you go through to get the routes onto SatMap - and have you had any issues?
Thanks
Geo.

If they were GPX files created by Memory Map you can transfer them to your Active 10 using the Satsync software downloadable from here:

Hi

I'm about to buy the satmap device but not sure if I need to buy a map SD card as well. Now that there is the satsync software, can I buy memory map and upload the maps on to the device which would give the added advantage of showing the routes as well? Would that be better or would I need to buy the sat map map SD card anyway? I was thinking of getting the satmap 1.50k GB map for £200 which seems good value for money. But then I noticed memory map are offering that too. Which would be better?

Any advice would be appreciated

Many thanks

The SatMap hardware will only accept SatMAp map cards which are currently pre-loaded so there is little point in purchasing an SD card.

If you want to grab a bargain try purchasing the device at the Outdoors Show currently running at the NEC, they have a discount map show special offer in place for people who purchse at the show - Mike

Satsync is the software that transfers certain GPX route files (mostly the type created by Memory Map) to the Active 10. If you want Landranger maps on the Active 10 you will need to buy their mapcard. You should know that the Satmap map data cannot be viewed on your PC whilst Memory Map's can...plus has additional bells and whistles like 3D views and printing capability as well as running on a pocket pc. Satmap say they will get an online route planner up and running but I wouldn't hold your breath....they were supposed to be doing a forum too.

Robs...
No - the routes are held as "highly commented" .mmo or .rfx files....... So direct upload to SatMap isn't an option.
Hence the query to see whether anyone else has gone done this route (oops - sorry!) as yet.

Thanks for your replies. I had thought it would be possible to upload a snapshot map at 1.50K with a route from memorymap via a converter program but obviously its more complicated than that. Looks like best to go for a satmap card and then use the forthcoming online route planner to download the routes etc.

Cheers

One other thing you might want to keep an eye out for is a SatMap active 10 routes page on the forum, where users will be able to share routes that are in the correct format to go straight on the device. - Mike

What is supposed to happen with those links to .map files?. If I right-click on them and do 'Save As', I get a file of HTML text containing the message 'Internal Server Error'.

Just a normal left click (unless you are left handed) will produce the download, simply choose the "Save" option and keep it somewhere safe before copying the .map file to the device - Mike

Edit to add this should be the way it works but it would appear there is a problem, it will be sorted out though

I tried left-click and the HTML page I referred to was displayed in the browser. It just says:

Menu for /downloads/satmap/active10/walks/Ingleborough.map

[an internal server error occured]

Edit:- our posts crossed in the post!

Works fine now, thanks.

Somebody has a sense of humour (or history): the file header contains:

'S1nclair Rul3z!'.

Geoff, have you tried opening a .map file in notepad that you have created on your own device? - my guess is that it will contain the same humourous text, I used to enjoy the Sinclair ZX80 and ZX81, more so when they were supplied in kit form! - great way to learn the real basics at a low cost - why that is in the .map file is anyones guess, put the file on your active 10 and it should display the route even if you don't have the 50/ 25K scale mapping for the area, it will still show on the base map - Mike
