What's the maximum size of SD card a Nuvi 310 can handle ?

I'm using a 2GB one at the moment.

Just turned my PC on and I hadn't noticed earlier that I had a Mapinstall icon on my desktop, clicked on that and the program appeared that I copied the pdf link for earlier.

Well happy with Garmin at the moment, got the update for free, and it would seem I now have Euro mapping.

Result Very Happy

Just updated mine, it's only let me install a new version of UK and Ireland, I've been exploring the disc but can't work out how to try and get the rest of europe on my nuvi SD card.

Is it possible to get full europe on a UK / Ireland only Nuvi with this disc?

Full Europe, excluding GB&I needs something over 1Gb, at least it did on my 510 with V8 maps. I had to leave off some parts of the outer reaches of Europe to fit inside 1Gb. V8 did not have Eastern Europe.

To load maps onto an SD card you need to use MapSource which the update will have installed on your PC. Check out the Mapsource manual which may be on the PC or you may have to download it. Essentially you run Mapsource and you see a tiled map. Highlight the tiles that you need and you will see them build up in a menu on the left of the screen, together with the cumulative file size. When you have highlighted all that you want (or need to keep file size down) then give your map extract a name, put the SD card in your card reader (much quicker than using the Garmin as a reader) and hit the transfer command. Then go away for half an hour or so while Mapsource constructs a full map from the selected tiles and then transfers it to your SD card. The new map will then show up in the Map info (Main menu then Map) and you need to tick it to enable it.

Hope this helps Very Happy

The procedure has changed with the 2008 release. You need to use MapInstall (which updating the UK coverage should install) to extend the coverage.

I've read through this thread and found it all very interesting. I'm experiencing some of my own update to CN NT 2008 Europe from V9 issues on my Nuvi 350:

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=416039#416039

Where I am at the minute is having the old garmin/gmapprom.img base map on the unit, and updated UK & Spain maps in the additional garmin/gmapsupp.img file.

On the Nuvi, unit from the Map Info screen, I unchecked the old maps, so it now only uses my new maps (those contained in the supp file). This *is* the case, because the Nuvi will now only allow me to find addresses to navigate to in the UK & Spain. Interestingly, if I set a course to a destination in Spain, it will route through France and show me the route (presumably using map details from the old garmin/gmapprom.img base map file that I told it not to use..?!

The reason I am interested is because I want to delete garmin/gmapprom.img (after backing it up) and replacing it with garmin/gmapsupp.img which I will rename to garmin/gmapprom.img. This way I hope to be able to update all of the Europe maps without having to use an SD card, using the device for storage...

Thoughts anyone?

Your Garmin unit is using the garmin/gmappROM.img base map file which sits under any specific area maps installed, in you case at the moment, UK and Spain to give you your route; it is not using not your unchecked map areas.

It is there to provide for routing between places on different installed map sections but, as you found, you can't usually use any of the data on the basemap yourself, such as specifying any places or routes on it - it is just used by the Garmin routing software.

But I don't know how the software will react if you do as you suggest, as it may get upset between your new '..rom' and '..supp' files set up. But as long as you do your backups including any hidden/system files you can no doubt recover!

But you might find it simpler and less hazardous to check current SD card prices - they may be less than you think as they seem to be dropping rapidly all the time.

I hope that helps with your query on this forum - I take it that you are still hoping for advice on the specific issues you are wrestling with on the main thread you are running!
