|
|
Hi guys, pick your brains please? I remember reading about a software upgrade for the older TomTom's for better handling of larger vehicles (trucks/coaches). does anyone know if it still around and will it work on my TomTom Go 520? So far touch wood it works very well and i've had no issues! but would like some info if possible. Thanks in advance. |

There's no such beast that I'm aware of. There are moves afoot to improve the products for HGV users but nothing set in concrete for existing devices. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks the 520 been far far better than the 300 i used to have! Would like a manufacturer to have an option to avoid a poi group eg low bridges! that would help alot! |

Indeed, sadly an avoid option used to exist in early TomTom software and was dropped, we've been pleading for its re-introduction ever since. _________________ Darren Griffin |

There has been talk, however, of the Highways Agency (?) collating the positions of all the low bridges in association with the SatNav manufacturers in order to produce exactly this function. It's due to how lorry drivers can't see height limit warning signs when they are navigating via GPS.
Personally, I'm sure TeleAtlas and NAVTEQ already have this info in their survey files so all the manufacturers really just have to buy the info from them and make a software update to use it (they managed it with toll roads and congestion charge areas). _________________ Gerry

There seems to a few organisations that supply low bridge POIs. Just put "Low Bridge POI" in Google and you will find them. |

Unfortunately, you'll find they are pirate copies of one that someone here used to make so you'll find they are very out of date.
The new solutions in the pipeline would work on map data I expect so that you can choose to avoid part of the road itself and not hope that you can find a way around a POI. _________________ Gerry

Whilst I would not go so far as to accuse them of being 'pirate' organisations, much of what Gerry has said is true. It takes 5 minutes to create a web page, gathering the data is another matter.
The one valued source of this data was a forum member here who had spent a great deal of time compiling and gathering the data which he made available free of charge. Sadly it was widely pirated and stolen and consequently he no longer bothers.
I'm not about to discuss individual sites but you have to ask yourself how a site has gathered the data in the first place? Do they have a large membership of users who contribute? Are they a well-known company? _________________ Darren Griffin |
