I have been in your position recently with regards which sat nav to buy and with hindsight it really is down to personal choice ,for me it was a choice between tomtom again or garmin.
It also depends on what your needs are !!do you need just UK maps or do you want Europe as well ?,do you need blue tooth ?.how much you want to spend?
After getting a dud Tomtom 720 I bought a Tomtom 520 and I am very pleased with it and if you are looking for a direct replacement it would be okay.
At the moment tomtom have got a promotion on the tomtoms
Some of the new tomtoms( 520 ,720,920,) have text to speech ,voice recognition, mp3 players and a sd card slot |

The answer depends on your budget, the latest TT ONE does not have a memory card slot, all the others do. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I don't know Garmins at all, but my suggestions for the TT range would be:
Go720 if you need Europe or Go520 if you don't.
or
One XL Europe or Regional (version with SD card and internal memory)
Not One "3rd Edition" |

Hi, thanks for that,
Can you tell me what is for, Speech Recognition, Text to speech for, also what is the fixed memory in the 720, is there a list of phones that will work with the unit that I can have a look at.
thanks
Ned
PS How do you make your sat nav safe without it being a pain !! |

here you can check for phone compatibility
http://www.tomtom.com/phones/compatibility/
Text to speech is if you use the computer generated voice it reads the the street names such as turn right into church street or turn left onto the A1
Speech Recognition, is you can input an address by speaking the ,Town, street , and house number to the tomtom
How to make your sat nav safe without being a pain is a difficult one I think all you can do is make sure there are no obvious signs in the car that you have a sat nav and then hope you will be lucky or keep a rottweiler on the back seat |

Hi,
looks like I may be getting a 720,
I saw a TomTom RDS-TMC traffic receiver as a accessory, can anyone tell me if the traffic information service is free or is it at extra cost.
thanks

The license to use the (receive) the RDS-TMC signals is part of the purchase price of the accessory, it is a one off payment as the license is yours for the life of the product.
I would also look at the 720T model as this is supplied with the RDS-TMC as part of the package, it is often cheaper to purchase a combined pack then two seperate units.
Be aware RDS-TMC reception within the UK is at best described as a postcode lottery, in some areas it works great other areas reception is very patchy - this will depend upon your location - Mike |

That's a neat looking clip, not seen that one before.

! Don't get me started, I seem to be having a one-man campaign about people referring to the various 'ONE' models by the confusing (and wrong) "v" numbers.
I'm happy to say that the Go 720 just *IS*. So far there is only one version of it, so no extra description needed! |

I would keep away from the vent clips. I damaged the air vent in my VW Passat with one of their phone clips. Going over rough roads eventually caused the vent louvre to break off. Also it guarantees you blow very hot air over it in winter if you have vents that have external louvres (a la VWs) as you can't close them when it's attached.
I would recommend the slightly more expensive but very well designed BRODIT / PROCLIP devices. See adv. to RHS of page. They usually offer a couple of mounting solutions specific to the make of your car.

The ordinary windscreen mount for the 720 is not bad. It's very simple and seems quite flimsy, but it's been fine on my 720 and doesn't wobble at all.
I did have a Brodit mount for my Go300 mounted on a "Move clip" (which are quite hard to find on the DSL Developments website. It's a pair of flat plates with a v-shaped wedge. One is fixed permanently on the dash and the other (fixed to the mount) locks into it for quick release. |
