Can you identify what the boxes are on the gantries listed above?
I will try and get a photo, as so far I keep forgetting to have my camera at the ready. |

Traffic on Friday (15th) was a bit slow when I was going home so I had plenty of time to examine each opposite gantry between J11 and 15.
Yes there is still the old camera with flash just before the M3 clockwise, but this section wasn't refurbished a few years ago.
I still cannot see any cameras or anything that looks boxlike that could hide any.
On Friday morning HeartFM had a brief article during the morning news about the rumours where they stated they had asked the Highways Agency for confirmation - but they 'refused to comment'.
So - who's going to volunteer to tool up the western section at a ton just to set the record straight ? _________________ Satnav:

If it were true, wouldn't the Highways Agency be bragging about it? |

After the warning/hoax/suspicious email from Talex I downloaded the latest update yesterday (Sunday), from memory 8023 I think.
Drove the M25 this morning junctions 15 to 11...................
Not a single camera warning ! _________________ Satnav:

I was under the impression that when the varible limits are not set the cameras are off.
This was the guidance given by the home office on the introduction of this system.
I travel M40 to A3 nightly at speeds cptn kirk would be proud off. no flashes, no tickets no strange feeling on the colar!
I have the old (4yrs) paper on safety cameras. I'll get the new one and check unless anyone else has.
I see no differance in digital cameras except they won't run out of film. The still look like Gatso so should still flash. If they don't you can say bye bye to your anti photo number plates. |

This could of course be accurate.
We get the "hoax" email sent to by Talex us as a warning to get us to download the latest update.
The update is correct in giving us no warnings because in fact there are no cameras.

I managed to get a so-so snap of the offending boxes.
Here's one of the gantries:
And a more detail (albeit rather dark) view of the box within the gantry:

Don't want to seem ungrateful, but any chance you could get a picture of the BACK of the gantry?
That's where the (fairly obvious) boxes for the old cameras were visible, and I'd assumed the new cams would be sited in the same place. |

Only if (a) I drive passed it with the wife in the car or (b) when I drive home it's daylight. There's an increasing chance of the latter of course, although it is tricky to catch it due to the distance vs. zoom issue. |

I thought that "safety" cameras had to be easily recognised ?
Hence the need to paint them yellow. _________________ Satnav:

Are all the cameras on the variable part painted yellow? I remember getting alerts from J10 - 12, but don't remember actually seeing a very obvious yellow camera. |

Hi,
For some reason these cameras have never been painted yellow, i can think the only reason would be by the time you would see the yellow box (In Your Mirror) it would be too late!
But on the other hand you would be able to see the ones on the other side of the carriageway. The original idea was so that you would know your are in an accident blackspot Ahem... and they were not there to gather revenue Ahem.. so putting them behind where you are going to go under does not really fit in to this they are giving us.

Ah right. I'm assuming the definite M25 cameras are also situated behind gantries, and aren't the usual on-a-pole-by-the-roadside jobs. |

That's right. The cameras are always on the back of the gantries with the large light up-speed limit signs, but not every gantry with a sign has a camera.
Surprisingly, I just waded through 26 pages of Google images and couldn't find a single picture of the BACK of a gantry showing the cameras. The one on this site is of a gantry that is a bit flimsier than the usual M25 ones.
The M25 ones are more enclosed and harder to see. |

3 small pictures on this page.
Scroll down to Photos - Police and Other Cameras
Pictures 1, 3 and 4 after that.
Picture 1 you can just see the black openings on the camera boxes low down on the gantry.
3 and 4 you can see the boxes along the top. |
