Read the Garmin Nuvi 710 Reviewed, Putting it on my whislist!

Just wondered as I'm new to this is it possible to get the Nuvi to display in UK colours EG: Blue Motorways, Green Main road and so on?

I had a tomtom before getting my Nuvi 300T Which I could download diffrent colour schemes.

I much pefer my Nuvi to the tomtom

no, you can't adjust the colours schemes - only select between day/night colours or have it change them automatically. you can add new vehicle icons though

Hi,

I had Streetpilots for x years and got rid of it because the Streetpilot sends you on roads which can be barely called a road (small concrete roads for tractors). Garmin always said that the have the info in order to put a weight on roads and considers all roads the same
I wonder if this still the case on the Nuvi 7X series
If doable can one try to calculate a route for me where I know Garmin always mistakes on.

I bought my 760 from an eBay seller in Ireland and on the whole I would agree with most - if not all of the comments made.

I think it is a very sleek slim and classic design with a flat back - one up on the Tom Tom.

Another plus point is the free for life traffic info - again one up on TT.

The FM transmitter on mine works quite well so I suspect the reviewer had a duff unit.

But it is not completely clear or without background hiss.

There is an anoying intermittant beep on Blue tooth phone calls - not sure if this is the phone or the Garmin but it doesnt do it with just the phone.

MP3 player works well as does the picture viewer.

Directions are very good but the warning of junctions is less good than I was used to in my BMW X5 in built unit.

The maps are garish and although detailed they appear almost childish.

But getting full street level maps included for almost all Europe was a good deal.

A previous Navman 520 was much much better.

The Navman was also more comprehensive down to private green lanes on Dartmoor. The Garman has missed out several tracks and paths on Dartmoor.

But the screen is great, very readible and I keep it at 30% most of the time with 50% in bright sunlight.

I have mounted my unit on a ProClip and bracket over the top central air grille and this has allowed me - just - to tuch the traffic gunnins behind it and away behind most of the stereo to the 12 volt power socket. Havnt got around to a proper hidden connect yet - but in my Audi A6 this is difficult - its too well built!!! Hardly any gaps to poke any cables into.

I paid just under £250 for mine which including the maps and the lifetime traffic function plus a mount that has the power socket built into it - another one to Garmin over TT - makes it a comparaible bargain against say the Tom Tom 720T.

Over all I am very pleased with it as an up to date piece of kit with new maps that was cheaper than putting in a second hand Audi in dash unit that would have had 2d out of date maps with no camera softwear.

P.S. The PGPS world camera softwear is indeed £10 and a darn sight better than the anoying wrong information Garmin supplies.

Got a SP C550 with GTM21 PtNo 10R-023487, just wondering if it's been updated or improved.

Hi, My Nuvi 710 FM transmitter works well, I normally have it at 88.7, just below Radio 2 so I can swap between the two.

As for the FM Traffic reciever, what an AWSEOME piece of kit. I turned on to the M6 South at Cannock yesterday, and the overhead display said 'M6 Closed J3-J2' so I set the Nuvi to go home (I just had it on for speed cameras), it got the traffic info and directed me down the M6 toll, off at T4, along the A5 to Husband's Bosworth and drop onto the A14 at Junction 1, as the M1 was busy heading to Catthorpe. It took me 2hrs 20mins to get from Shropshire to Cambridge, mainly due to lorries on the A5, when I do the same trip on the M6 it takes 2 hours. According to Radio 2 and the Nuvi I would have been sat at J3 of the M6 for 90 minutes, so that 'fat' cable is worth it's weight in gold in my opinion.

As an aside, anyone know if it is possible to hardwire in the Nuvi + traffic, as I don't like cables everywhere , and I have seen kits for the Tom Tom.

I'd be interested to know your thoughts on the following please.

1) How does the satellite accuracy compare to that of the Nuvi 3xx or 6xx range

2) How does the map display compare to the Nuvi 3xx and 6xx range (the 6xx ranged use to have awful lag but Germin released a firmware update so the screen refreshes twice per second

3) How does the traffic display compared to the Nuvi 3xx and 6xx range. Your report indicates that the screen shots weren't what you actually saw,

Question 1 was where you can see the satellite accuracy screen display which shows satellites received and the lock against each (blue bar) and the 9 -15ft accuracy comment in the green bar. I wondered if having a vertical antenna rather than a horizontal flip out one made any difference to the accuracy "on the road"

Great review and is helping me build my knowledge of these things. I got a 610T about 5 months ago and I am very pleased with it but it is nice to be able to compare it with the new offering.
I find the Garmin maps often out of date and am wondering if they will be issuing updates as time goes by as I believe Tom Tom does. I was surprised it doesn't have text to speech because my old Medion PDA bought in 2003 from Aldi had that even though the unit itself was a pain to use.
Bluetooth handsfree works well and accepts transfer from a Samsung G600. I do have one problem though. When I update the phone then try to update the unit and forget to just add the new number I find I have doubled up on the contacts in the phone. Does anyone know how to delete the units' phonebook and start all over again??
I have had to load in things like the London congestion charge from one of the free sites onto an SD card and I notice that only the original area was included. Everything in the West of London was missing.
Sorry to ramble on but as a first time user with a need sometimes to get to the centre of Birmingham this unit is wonderful.
