Smartphone Software for walking - Would Anquest be suitable?

Hi All

I have recently purchased a GPS receiver for my smartphone and have installed TomTom as a route planner. It works fine, but of course is not suitable for walking.

Would Anquest be the right sort of software to use for walking around the countryside on public footpaths? Am I barking up completely the wrong tree here?

What type of phone are you using? there are lots of different "SmartPhones" as this could affect which Topo maps will work with it, there are applications available for most of them though - Mike

Anquet will only work if it's a Windows Smartphone. If it is, the best functioning software (to my mind) is Memory Map, but check whether the exact maps you want are available. They both do OS 25k and 50k maps, but vary the way they package areas.

When tracking your position in Anquet, the icon doesn't move until you reach the edge of the screen - in MM it stays centred once locked - also the tracking to next waypoint is easier to use in MM (and works very well in a non-touchscreen smartphone).

Both Anquet and Memory Map websites (and Fugawi, for that matter) let you download a trial version to play with.

If you've got a Symbian phone, then you'll have to use something like View Ranger, which I believe is download only and doesn't run on a PC.

I have had View Ranger (for a week) on my N78. I cocked up the map-pane selection on the website but was told to just have another go, at no extra charge - all this took place over the weekend. I got the distinct impression it's run by a human, and a very helpful one at that.

I think the software and choice of maps is very good but can't offer comparisons with any alternatives.
