Just be aware that these systems effectively allow others to use some of YOUR bandwidth to share the data.
When you install the application you are agreeing to this use. Fine if you are fully aware of it and its implications. But you must realise that even if you are not using iPlayer (or Sky's Anytime PC Service), if you Pc is on then it will be consuming data as it shares with other iPlayer users.
This will impact on your data usage, important if you have a cap as most of us now do. _________________ Darren Griffin |

You can turn this 'feature' off by going into your Task Manager and stopping the process Kontiki (at work now and cant check the spelling) |

But that will disable the whole service, the actual service KService is required to run iPlayer, disabling it will disable iPlayer.
I appreciate you could disable this when you're not using iPlayer but most users unfamiliar with such matters will not be aware that this is necessary. And more worryingly, uninstalling iPlayer (or C4's 4OD, or SKY Anytime) does not uninstall kontiki. _________________ Darren Griffin |

ah I didnt realise it disabled the whole program. I just noticed that Kontiki was still running once I had shut the iplayer application down.

sorry - slightly wrong...
if you close the download manager then, by default, you keep 'sharing' the files for upload to other users. the option is to turn off the p2p when you close the download manager.
i don't have any limits on my connection so not too fussed to be honest!

Surely if, in Settings, under "Peer-to-Peer Network Participation" you uncheck the box by "Allow programmes to be shared when you exit Download Manager", others won't be using your bandwidth to share the data?
I don't have any limits on my connection either, so I'm not bothered, but would like to understand it! _________________ Anita

I heard a report that this service is not Mac compatible, only Windows compatible - so it's likely to be not just the iPhone which doesn't work.
The BBC has predicted the end of the TV schedule within 10 years because of people using On Demand, iPlayer and the like.
Personally, I see the TV schedule sticking around for longer than that because we all have recording devices of some kind and if we all watch programmes at different times, it will kill the "did you see...last night" conversations and how will all these reality TV and phone-in programmes work? _________________ Andy

I'm surprised so many of you claim to have unlimited bandwidth. Most if not all ISPs now enforce limits?
Mine is 8GB of peak usage (unlimited overnight) which I rarely get close to but it is still limited. And this is a premier service for heavy users. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Mine is classed as unlimited with the proviso of Fair Usage which, if you are deemed to have exceeded, they will then limit your bandwidth during Peak Times.
One month I did get to 16GB, without any problem. _________________ Richard

if i download more than 750mb between 4pm and midnight (peak time) then my speed gets reduced - there are no extra charges and i don't lose the connection, it just get's limited. even having said that, it's only the top 5% of users who 'take the pee' so it's still basically unlimited bandwidth albeit with a possibly reduced speed at peak times.

Note 'The Register's' spelling mistook in their URl
That is pretty much what happens to my connection, it's not unlimited though is it! _________________ Darren Griffin |
