pocketgpsworld.comWe have been trying to obtain a sample of Panasonic's new entry into the GPS Market (the unforgettably titled Strada CN-GP50) from Panasonic UK for some time now. Promises have been made and then broken and to be honest we have given up chasing them. However, thanks to reader John Seccombe we can at least publish this reader review of the unit. Over to John...

"I have just had an opportunity to trial Panasonic’s first introduction to the standalone GPS market, the Panasonic CN-GP50N. As a new unit on the shelves it has been received with some interest. I myself have always held Panasonic products in high regard and I am happy to say I am not disappointed. Although only a brief overview of the unit I found myself warming to it."

Hi Chaps,
The software must be licensed from Navigon, and Navigon is slow!

shame they didn't use iGo! still, navigon is decent software but, as mentioned, can be a bit slow at times. it's very easy to use and very intuitive too!

i like the idea of the anti-drop tie however this seems like a cop out to say "well, we know our mount is rubbish but instead of making w=one that doesn't fall off we'll just give you some string to when it falls it won't break on the floor it'll just break as it swings agint the side of th car"... ;)

During general use the Panasonic is ok but do anything else and it'll just cough. I can imagine that with a few custom poi's on board it it could give up like the Navman S**.
It was the destination search that was the slowest!

Anyway not a bad unit so I just ordered another one, this time for the old man! Wink

How much are they? I'd personally not buy a Navigon based unit as I dislike the interface and speed but each to their own!

One thing I do like about the Navigon based units is the way it names the road in your maneuver eg Turn left onto the A41.

Very useful here in the UK.

Amazon will sell you one for about £255 all in.

I also agree with you darren, for a seasoned pro you'll just be always wanting more!

One thing I will add about road names. On my Navman you can see the road names displayed on the botton of the screen as you pass them, and they are easily read on the map too. On the panasonic menu you have an option to display the road names on the map which was set to off for some reason. When I turned it on the road names were displayed all over the place, up, down, left right. You can see what I mean with the last screen shot.

This only has five names displayed, at times the whole screen was filled with them. Best left OFF.

This isn't meant to sound like an interrogation but what lead you to buy that for your father when a 720 could be had for a lot less or indeed a Garmin?

Good question. He saw the one I bought for my friend who is soon moving to Greece and this is the first satnav I have found with decent Greek Maps. Anyway he saw, liked it, wanted it. No debate. Smile

Fair enough, I hadn't considered the Greece mapping feature.

Until recently only Garmin were offering greek mapping but when you dig deeper you find it only covers Athens. Although it was a bit of a gamble we were happy to find that the Panasonic covers the whole of greece with highways and local coverage.

I don't know if other Navigon devices have these maps or if this will be part of thier new software range?

iirc navigon use navteq maps so it may be that the 2008 navteq maps have the extra detail for greece?

It would have seemed likly as all the mapping companies are starting to show most of the baltic countries now, but not greece! There in lies the gamble I took with the Panasonic.

Would hve been expensive if it had gone wrong, glad it wasn't my money. Twisted Evil

I have just discovered that Panasonic themselves are offering a free Speed camera Download when you register on thier website. The good news is that this means it is possable to get PGPS Safety cameras on to the unit, the question will be how.
