 Source: The Register. Satnav seems to be getting a bad rap lately, what with drivers blindly following navigation instructions onto railway lines or attempting to board non-existent ferries but here is yet another case.
In this case it is the inhabitants of a small Shropshire village who are up in arms (excuse the pun!). It would appear that tank transporters fully laden with battle tanks are confusing the sleepy village of Donnington with the nearby and identically named Donnington Army barracks.
One villager who clearly doesn't understand how navigation devices work was quick to blame the 'mapping systems' for sending the 70-ton monsters through their village on at least seven occasions in the past week. An army spokesman was quick to point out that the transporters are operated by private contractors and not Army drivers and the true issue is the oft repeated one of poorly prepared drivers blindly following navigation instructions without any forward planning!

What are they grumbling about? You'd think they wouldn't mind a change from all the F1 cars. Some people just want any old excuse to moan.

I think he knew that, and was merely extending the error a little. Donington Park (and Castle Donington) only have three "n"s as opposed to the four in Donnington, too.

Well, excuse me!!  Donnington Park is at Newbury, Berkshire. I should know - I looked it up on Autoroute Express.

Best one I heard was of the taxi driver in Bournemouth who had 2 drunken females get in and ask to go to Lymington, he typed in Limington and took them to Yeovil instead of near Southampton. I dont think he was too happy that his £200 fare wasnt right
I am surprised that health and safety havent made it mandatory for a verbal statement from the gps warning of the dangers of listening to onscreen voices.
Mind I always used to ignore the mother-in-law sitting in the back seat so perhaps I was pre trained

For that price I'd have been tempted to take them to the Limington near Limerick (Maine, USA). The same distance 50 mile delivery pays me £25!!!

I dont think the amount of Ns in Donnington is high brow more like scraping the bottom of the barrel

If you have seen the condition of some of Bournemouths Yellow cabs, and the state the girls get into after leaving certain areas, I think Limington was the safest option. Afterall, we don't want any Riff-Raff down in sleepy sailor-town Lymington do we.

Got myself caught out in the middle of Sheffield last week. Using the latest Tom Tom Nav 6 map for the UK, it got me completely lost in the city centre. Ended up paying more atention to the the road signs, and less to the 'do a U turn' screams from Jane, and I got out easily. Was shocked that a major UK city is so poorly mapped, which was why I relied upon it. I live in the sticks and quite often ignore where it would like to take me.
Still, I wasn't transporting tanks

There's your mistake - we all know what women and navigation are like as a combination
Change your TomTom to a male voice and you'll find it does a much better job 
Basic map reading skillls should be included in the National Curriculum, just like the dying art of mental arithmatic
