hi, could anyone tell me if the specs cameras are capable of monitering more than one speed limit, so say the speed limit was 60mph on a single road and i came along in a hgv the limit would be 40mph for the hgv. so could the specs cams catch a hgv doing 50 mph or do they only moniter for 60mph. |

Oh yes, SPECS and indeed many other safety cameras are capable of doing just that. _________________ Darren Griffin |

From Warwickshire's Safety Camera partnership here.
Quote: | Some drivers of goods vehicles are under the misapprehension that outside of built up areas speed cameras can only detect cars and motorbikes exceeding the speed limit. The reality is that both fixed and mobile speed cameras can and are used to detect larger vehicles when they exceed the limit.” |

Those first two links certainly seem convinced, although the second one also says " Gatso speed cameras need to (be) calibrated and only record traffic in one lane at a time." which isn't true is it?
The third one doesn't say anything about differing speed limits, only that all vehicle types will get flashed.
HOWEVER, I just found a reference on the actual Gatsometer.com website that says:
Quote: | The radar 24 system can be set to distinguish between cars and lorries. |
..so it seems to be true!
I just can't see how it could work though. Maybe with a fully integrated digital system with immediate ANPR checking back with the registration database, but a straightforward Gatso? They just don't seem clever enough.
We know that they consist of a radar unit, a timed flash system and a camera. At a stretch, the radar MIGHT be able to say if a vehicle was "big" or "small", but not with any degree of accuracy. Surely it's busy enough just looking for the Doppler shift to register speed, and below that speed, it's not going to trigger a flash whatever the size.
Anyone got a users' manual?
Whilst trawling for info elsewhere, I did find THIS picture though :

Put a height finder on the camera and it will soon tell the difference between a car and truck, where it goes wrong is a mini bus - the height can trigger the radar but the speed is legal - driver still gets a ticket, easy to prove its wrong though - Mike |
