|
|
Hi all.
Whats the latest on Ordnance Survey and the POI? Are they going to provide 'us' with POI accessible to us mortal general public.... and if so, does anyone know how much?! If for free (for example) it might mean that there would be no need for anyone to submit their own POI or the need to find POI any where else! Anyone else have any comment to make on this subject?? |

i don't think they were actually going to provide them via our site? Mike B will clarify but i read it as being 'they have this info, would you use it'?

What have you read Bod?
I've seen reports about "freeing our data" but that refers to OS mapping itself.
I can't believe they have POI lists of every McDonalds etc. that they are hiding from us! |

I'm sure they've got lists of everything .... what I was trying to say was, have they actually got them presented as what we would think of as POI files? |

That depends on what your consider as a valid POI? They have a huge database of POIs covering a vast range of subjects from Asdas to Zoos not forgetting bus stops, banks, every manor of retail premises etc etc.
They are now looking at options for delivering these and indeed if there is a commercial market for their sale to end-users. _________________ Darren Griffin

Hi Darren, regarding your last 'quote' on here..."They have a huge database of POIs covering a vast range of subjects from Asdas to Zoos not forgetting bus stops, banks, every manor of retail premises etc etc.".... THAT was the point I was trying to make. So...if they DO have such a database, would Ordnance Survey be willing to divulge it to people like us?! Its about time in this day-and-age they SHOULD do. Especially if we're paying for it in some way or other already!
Does anyone have the 'power' to ask for it?? |

I believe MikeB's article here answers that?
They have been building this database for some time now, or more accurately, a business partner has been, and they are now seeking consultation on possible business models with regard to making this data available.
The OS is a self-supporting business (indeed it actually contributes income to the exchequer) so it won't be giving it away. _________________ Darren Griffin |
