I've got a Navman S90i and I don't like the long trailing wire type TMC aerial that comes with it. Are there any neater alternatives like a little rubbery stick  or similar. I don't want to leave the S90i on display in the car and having a great long trailing lead is not very convenient.

Problem is that you need an efficient aerial for reception of the RDS information (which is transmitted at lower powers than you may think!)
The 'piece of string' is actually quiet efficient - but not inside the partial Faraday Cage we call a car! For best results get a connection to an external aerial (existing car radio aerial with a splitter is often the simplest). Have a look at the posts here for some ways of doing this.

You might find you do not need the nasty wire. If you get decent Classic FM reception, you might get by without it. |

Came across this while researching the new Becker units.
Not sure how well it would work and looks like it has 4 positions on the connector jack.

Only if you have your unit connected to an external aerial. Cars are VERY good at blocking radio signals. Also the RDS signal is transmitted at lower power levels than the main broadcast signal giving rise to poor TMC detection even in the presence of what seems to be a good ClassicFM signal.

I have just bought one of the stick antennas from a chap on eBay.
When it arrives and I have time to test it I'll post back. (could be a week or two, though) |

I live just up the road from you (Barnton) and can assure you that TMC works on my S90i without the aerial, in many (agreed not all) areas.
As I said, it might work for the OP if he is lucky. |

What transmitter are you seeing in Barnton? Just curious  Before I connected the nuvi to the car aerial I had to get onto the A559 to get a signal. This is the highest point for a few miles (at 80m !!) - at home (55m) it was very hit-and-(mostly) miss affair. Now I get reception (GALAXY FM) from central Manchester at home within 1 minute of turning on.

Well, it's been a while but at long last the aerial has arrived from Germany.
it is 10.5 cm long, so not overly obtrusive, but can't pick any sort of signal up unless you are very close to the transmitter.
I am now going to try the splitter option. |
