Hi all
Please can anybody help? ive got a second hand x-980T with SD card and DVD, and im trying to connect it to my XP pc...I have active sync 4.5 and it reconises and connects to the unit..
When i insert my sd card i get the message "Change Map" Canarias.fdp or Europe.fdp....
Both come up "unable to open the map" when selected..
ive tried installing the dvd onto my pc,and i get so far and get the message "Please Connect your Portable Device".
When i connect i get the message "Fatel Application Error" on the GPS.....
Click "ok" and your back to the "Please Connect your Portable Device" on the pc again..
Can anyone please help? I only have a few days to send this back if ive brought a wrong un!!!
Im guessing it has v6 on it,,,If i upgrade to v7,,will i get a new pre installed card?
Many Many Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can think of is do a hard reset of the 980 and try again.
If I read your post correctly it sounds like you're putting the SD in after connecting the unit, you need to have the SD in when you connect.

Hi Mike,,,Will try hard reset now...
Im leaving the card in at all times....
It connects to active sync 4.5 (have also tried 3.8) but on install of the dvd the Viamichelin Instal doesnt seem to see the gps...Although the pic of the sd with the red circle is showing up (not to remove!)
Only thing im worried about is if i do hard reset, does it totally wipe sd card? As i cannot load the DVD to my pc to restore SD card..
Thanks buddy,,Tel |

Tel,
The hard reset will only require you to reset the language, miles or km, currency etc.
Good luck, I'm afraid I've got to dash _________________ Mike

I mention this every now and again, though I seem so far to be the only one who has been affected by the particular problem! Look at 'Connections' in ActiveSynch to make sure that the 'Allow USB connections' box is still checked. _________________ David

Cheers Mike.
Have tried hard reset, but the DVD still only loads to the same point, and then i get the message "Please connect your portable device"..
Active sync is saying connected, and i can explore the SD card using that.
The Satnav is showing a SD card with a Red Circle sign through it..
Anyone else any suggestions? Getting desperate here!!!
Thanks..Tel |

If you haven't tried it, someone cleared a problem in the last few weeks by completely UnInstalling all VM files and then Installing from scratch again. You might like to track down the post to see if it's of use to you. _________________ David

My very last thought! Did you have the 980 connected to the PC at the start of the Install, or did you WAIT until the Installation procedure asked you to connect it?
BTW, I don't know if you have seen the full V7 User Manual? If not, you will find full install instructions there. You can download it from the VM site here:
If you do have V6 the manual you need is
(but the old Adobe Version used here may give a problem reading it)
Finally (if you haven't already, and have time before your warranty expires!) have a look at the Help section on the website - as an example No 2926 mentions several points which can prevent the 980 being recognised.
Hope you finally get sorted ok one way or another!

Cheers David.
Really appreciate your time!
Have tried as much as i can,but all seems in vain..Warrenty wont stand as im the second owner..
Looks like it is gonna have to be sent back to the seller..
Im guessing theres a problem with the files on the card,(although) when i explore it theres quite a few in there..
Is it possible to pay someone to post my card to and them restore it with their connected 980?
Obviously if anyones interested,i'll pay.?
Hopefully that way,i'll be able to get it too connect?
Cheers,Tel |

Re above post:-----
I have v6. Thats obviously not loading.as its "unable to load map"
If i pay the 79 euro with Viamichelin to upgrade to v7... Do i get a brand new SD card, that i can slot in,already to go? and overcome all the problems im having?
Cheers |

Tel - I hope someone else can confirm these thoughts, as I'm only speaking from what I (think I) understand from this forum and the VM info over the last month or so - not from bitter experience.
First, I think the SD card supplied with the satnav is coded to match the CD and the unit, and therefore it could be difficult (?) to use someone else's version to recreate your data. (Similarly I think an UPGRADE of a system/map would not work if a previous version is not already installed on the PC).
However, if the full price is paid for a completely new V7 installation (which is SD and CD) it would hopefully work, PROVIDING that all features on your 980 itself are working ok (eg when navigating, setting up data, etc.), and the problem is only in setting up communication with the PC. If even the 980 unit itself is not 100% then maybe you do need to try and return it.
Before spending the €79 though I think you need to take advice from VM, who may also be able to help with your PC problem. _________________ David

Yes , thats my understanding too. The maps on the SD card are keyed to the PND. Whilst the original CD itself is not, when you install the VM software from the CD it gets the key from the PND and so the installation on the PC is then keyed to a PND.
Any transfer of data using VM to the SD card ( including a restore ) would then be only usable on that PND. |

Just a thought but if you are using a Thinkpad Laptop and a Huawei 3G modem there seems to be a conflict with ActiveSync 4.0 upwards. I downloaded an older version of ActiveSync (3.8) and installed it in place of 4.0. This solved the problem. Just a thought! |
