it was working fine one day, next day turn it on and all i get is a picture of the tomtom and a small picture of a hard drive next to it,afer about 20 seconds a red cross appears, and then starts flashing.
i have tried resetting it to no avail.
when i plug it into my pc you get the "bing-bong" sound as though something has been connected, but it doesn't launch tomtom home.
when i start tomtom home manually it asks me to connect the tomtom?
my computer won;t find it as removable hardwear only. it's only about 2 weeks old as well.bloody thing.
is it knackered?

When you connect to the PC, do you not get the "Connect to computer?" screen on the TT?
Anything changed on the PC? Try a different USB socket or check Device Manager for USB conflicts? |

the only thing that happens when i connect it to the computer is the picture of the hard drive and the red cross disappear. nothing else.
i will try a different usb socket, but as i said i do get the bing-bong from the computer when i plug it in.so it knows something is there.

Have you missed something out here?
1 It was working.
2 You switched it off.
3 You switched it on next day and it was dead.
That seems to be missing what happened to it between steps 2 and 3. Did you connect it to your PC after that working day? Did you then disconnect it properly?
Have you tried reset button for 30 seconds or more? _________________ Dennis

Would there be any chance that you've done a complete backup of it some time? Please say yes and that you copied the whole lot using Windows Explorer. _________________ Dennis

no such luck i am afraid.even if i had i can't get my pc to recognise it.
with regards to how it happened:-
i was staying down south at my parents and was messing about trying to get the tomtom plus stuff to work with my mobile, it wouldn't get past 65% though so gave it up as a bad job.
i then used it to get back to where we were staying with no problems and turned it off.
next day, turned it on for the trip back up north and got nothing.
the only problem i can think of was the night before i left it in the car overnight, and when i turned it on the following day it took a couple of attempts to calculate the route.

Sorry, BASIC questions ...
It is charged up?
Did you try the 30 secs reset?
Are you sure PC doesn't recognise it? You get the bing bong, have you looked using Windows Explorer?
Try long resets with it powered up and not powered up. _________________ Dennis

On the PC press the "Start/ My Computer" icon, this should display any hard drives and card readers you have attached, next Plug the TomTom back in to the PC and switch it on, after a few seconds does another drive appear (or possibly two), if so can you open either of these to reveal files/ folders? - Mike |

Then it may have got corrupted when you disconnected it last. Do you always use "Disconnect device" in Home or "safely Remove Hardware" in the System tray next to the PC clock? If not, and you unplugged while it was accessing the drive, it can easily happen.
Basically, if there's nothing to access and you haven't got any backups, then it's back to TomTom I'm afraid. We could get the system files back onto it, but you need TomTom's help if you don't want to pay for new maps. |

the drives come up as removable discs and look like open ended boxes.
it has only been connected to my pc once, which was when i first bought it to set it up.
i will have to give tomtom help a ring tomorrow to see what can be done.

Not wishing you a similar problem to myself, but it sounds exactly the same issue. Mine went to TomTom on 05 Nov 07 and despite promises I still do not have it back. I have written to TT CEO to ask his help within 14 days else its small claims court to recover my money. TT have now had my 720 twice as long as I have - if that was not painful enough, the price has dropped over £80 as well since I purchased it.
Best of luck. |

yeah, noticed the price drop. paid 229 on the 13th of november from dixons online. its now at 180.
i have tried a few other things that tt support have said to try but nothing is working,so it looks like its going back to tomtom. i will see if i can get dixons to swap it first though.
