I bought a new Nuvi250 & turned it on.
It told me the maps were 1 year old. Ridiculous for a new unit bought on 23/12.

After reading some posts here, it seems new units are shipping with 2008 maps. So some customers are getting old stock.

I called Garmin & they say they "may" give the updated maps for free in Feb / March to customers who bought the units with old maps while they should have got new maps.

I suggest anyone wiht a similar problem call them & ask about this.
The more people that do they will put Garmin under more pressure to give the new maps updates for free & not rip customers off.
They could solve this by just putting a sticker on the box to indicate what maps you are getting.

Anyway, their freephone number (UK) is: 0808-238-0000

Yes. The current version is 2008 (which would be v10 if they didn't change the version representation)

However in the past Garmin have only offered an update if you purchased it AFTER the new maps were made available.

When i bought my i3 (end of 2005) the bar code stated the map version on the box.

That's because the previous versions where v7, v8, v9 and the latest version is called 2008 (which would be v10 if they continued using the vxx numbers)

Out of curiousity, have Garmin done as they threatened/promised and taken the second unlock away? (As in, if you go to http://my.garmin.com, will it let you generate another code, or does it say they're all issued?)

Hi all,

I was given a unlock code by Garmin the other day when I registered. Does this mean I can download the latest 2008 maps onto my 250, currently on V9. I have just tried to access My Garmin on the Garmin site, but there seems to be a problem logging on. Anybody else haveing the same problem.

This should just be a matter of copying the NT 2008 GMAPPROM.IMG to the 'other' unit and creating a GMAPPROM.UNL file containing the 25 digit unlock code (That you've generated).

Of course, backing up the 'other' unit's GMAPPROM.IMG (and making a note of its unlock code), would be a very wise first step!! - in case you need to fall back.

If I got the code, but have no Mapsource maps for NT 2008 apart from the .IMG file, how is the .UNL file created?

Just using Notepad - 25 digit unlock code with all the dashes discarded.

Hi, I purchased a Nuvi 300 in late December from Comet which seems to be 'v8'.

I've checked on Garmin's website (with the unit connected via USB) and it says I'm up-to-date.

As far as I can see, v8 was released September 2006, so it's annoying that I've got old stock.

Does anyone know if v9 or 2008 is available for the 300, and should I be badgering Garmin for a freebie update?

Any comments most welcome.

Cheers
Clive

Have you actually registered the Nüvi @ my.garmin.com?

I got a Streetpilot C510 in December '06 that came with V9 and a Nüvi 310 in April '07 that still had V8 (and some ancient firmware). I used my.garmin.com to generate a 2nd unlock for the Nüvi, using the C510's voucher and thought nothing more about it.

In September (or thereabouts), I finally remembered to register the Nüvi and when I did, it said I qualified for a map update. After a bit of reminding, Garmin sent me the V9 DVD, along with an upgrade from UK / Ireland to the whole of Europe (x2 - so I applied it to the C510 as well!)

(Interestingly, it wasn't an 'update' disk they sent - it was the 'full' disk - well actually they sent two in the end!.)

Now somewhere, it said that the 310 had only just been registered in-time to qualify. I wonder if you've fallen between two stools ... too late for the V9 upgrade, but too soon for V2008 (which isn't available yet as an upgrade).

I reckon a call to Garmin is in order...
