Quote from that article:
Quote: | Ordnance Survey, which provides the underlying road network data to the satellite navigation industry, |
They do?
I thought the likes of Navteq and TeleAtlas stepped in because data from Ordnance Survey was either not for sale or was prohibitively expensive |

i believe they bought the initial data from OS and then kept it up to date. no point reinventing the wheel...
in the OS POI's thread someone mentioned that the eire equivalent wanted too much money for their data so navteq literally had to map the whole country from scratch (hence the delay in getting full maps for that country!)

That's correct, OS supplied the initial data to both Navteq and TeleAtlas upon which they built their data sets.
Navteq have already annoucned their 'Transport' map set that contains bridge heights, road widths and weight restrictions etc. _________________ Darren Griffin |

should be good for the next generation of devices that can then use this data and the choice of vehicle will make a REAL difference!!

Only if you think the driver would take notice of the Satnav, he clearly did not take any notice of the bridge height signs and warnings on the approach!
Satnav's are not a replacement for observation and driving skills. _________________ Darren Griffin |

That is a fantastic piece of reporting:
A LORRY flipped on its side after the driver realised that his vehicle would not go under the railway bridge in Pangbourne.
Looking at the picture, it does indeed appear that the lorry driver approached the underpass at speed and then realising he wouldn't fit under it, he flipped his lorry onto it's side to try and slide it under the bridge sideways. Sorry, I've been watching too many "Die Hard" movies recently. _________________ Gone fishing! |

Could provide an interesting court case if the girders Railtrack put in reduced the height clearance but failed to update the height sign. _________________ Graham.
