Hello

I have just purchased the Myguide 3100. I tried it out over the weekend and found that I kept losing the gps signal. When I start it initially it takes about 2 minutes to get a gps lock whilst standing outside.

On Saturday I travelled from Bradford to Bolton and most of the way on the M62 I didn’t have a gps signal, thus no use in having the sat nav. Even whilst in Bolton it kept losing signal.

On Sunday I travelled from Bradford to Coventry via M1 and again the longest it held the gps signal was about 25 mins. It kept losing the signal.

At times on while on the M62 and M1 it showed that I’m driving in the middle of nowhere. I know the maps are not update that regularly but the m62 and m1 have been around for some time.

I’m not sure if it’s the unit itself or is this normal. I’ve got a standard Peugeot 306 2000 model and I had my Bluetooth headset on. I had placed the sat nav on the right hand side of the dashboard. Not sure if I should put it in the middle of the dashboard.

Your thoughts please…

Does it have one of the blue-ish Anthermic (Heat reflecting) Windscreens? If so, the coating blocks the Sat Nav signal.

Does the windscreen have an untreated area up near the rear view mirror?

The 306 does have an athermic windscreen. The way round the lock problem is to get a good lock on 6 or 7 sats before getting in the car and setting up. Once done it should behave quite well.

I would look into getting an external GPS aerial for the unit, Maplins sell one but I am not too sure if it will connect to your device, there is a socket for the GPS aerial, I am not aware of the connector type though - take it to the shop to find out if it will fit.
Route the thin cable around the edge of the screen, and put the aerial on the rear view mirror (in between the mirror and windscreen, this will improve reception considerably - Mike

I have the same problem of weak signals in my Renault Laguna. There are some good articles on athermic windscreens on the web.

I do not think the Maplin antenna will fit. The Myguide 3100 has a 2.5mm coaxial socket for the antenna (VERY tiny), whilst most antennas have MCX or mMCX connectors. I have tried Halfords, who know nothing (surprise?) despite their website saying "this may need an external antenna"(!!), and recently emailed MyGuide HQ in Hong Kong to try and find any UK distributors of a suitable antenna.

Will update when/if I ever hear anything.

I contacted the German website. They can supply an antenna which fits the MyGuide 3000 series for 30 euros plus 17.50 euros shipping !! Is there really no UK source of a compatible antenna???

Purchased a GPS antenna for £7.99 + £1.00 postage. Works fine, just sitting on the dashboard inside the windscreen. All happy now.
