It has been a very long time in coming but this week the EU finally agreed to commit funding to the Galileo GPS system.
This £2+ billion pound project, projected to be operational by 2013, had been in limbo for some time with initial proposals that funding come from private investment proving to be unrealistic. The funds have been found from unused farming subsidies.
But not everyone is happy, the agreement was made without Spain's backing. Spain had wanted a greater degree of involvement and demanded a ground control station on its territory. Ground stations in Munich and Rome have been agree but the EU could not justify the expense of a third as Spain had demanded.

Quote: | Although we do currently enjoy open access to the US system it is run and controlled by the US Military and they give no guarantees as to access in future. |
Except for the fact that the new satellites recently bought are without the selective access hardware... |

SA just degrades the accuracy of the C/A code though. They could if they chose to switch off the C/A code completely and can even do this for a specific area only. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Make no mistake about this, the real reason behind this project is so that the EU can bring in pay as you drive road charging.Once this system is up and running new laws will be passed so everyone will have a device fitted to their vehicle so they can be charged. |

Senator Andreotti always says: "A pensar male si fa peccato, ma raramente si sbaglia"
"To think badly (of someone else intention) is a sin, but rarely wrong"
Particularly with Bruxelles. |

Do you think they could implement pay as you drive road charging without using Galileo then? _________________ Gone fishing! |

Giove-B, one of the pair of test satellites for the European satellite navigation network was suffered a setback recently when it was blasted by space radiation.
The radiation caused Giove-B to switch to a safe fallback mode to protect its systems. Esa have now brought the satellite back on-line and are investigating the cause of this malfunction.
Space radiation is not an unexpected phenomenon and so the design would normally take into account such events. Engineers will no doubt be looking closely at why radiation caused the satellite to enter a fall back operational mode. _________________ Darren Griffin |
