The following may NOT relate at all to forum members in Europe but...
We in North America were pleasantly surprised to find out in the last day or so that the combination of firmware 7.221 AND North_America map version 7.10 for a TomTom720 would NOW accept speech recognition IF the user created a text file called support_asr.dat with just the number 1 in it and put this file in the ASR folder on the unit.
No mapsettings.cfg file was involved.
As I said, perhaps Europeans already have the file I mentioned in the ASR folder, maybe your 720's with speech don't need that file. I don't know....
Just saying what works for us in North America. |

This is the response I got today:
Response (Terence R. (UK)) 30/11/2007 12.42 PM
Dear,
Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support.
Unfortunately I cannot offer you the map as a download to your account.
This request was made specifically to our 2nd Level Team, however this map is still in development and should become available shortly as you know.
The map that my colleague has managed to add to other accounts is not the same map that will be provided via TomTom HOME.
This is a similar map which is the same version, howvever the map available under Latest map Guarantee will have more detail than the current map, hence why it is taking a bit longer than expected to be available.
Should you have further questions or suggestions, please let us know.
You can also speak to us directly on the number below.
084 516 100 09
With Best Regards
The TomTom Customer Support Team |

Nope haven't toppled over so must stiil have both legs attached and B****r
your right Western and Central Europe file size 2036Mb!!! according to map download site. Maybe there all sat round deciding which bits of country to lop off to get within 2GB
My bet it will be Poland, as it must be empty as they are all round here (and before anyone takes offence my parents were Eastern European so i think i allowed this one!)
It is coming up to Christmas so they might issue us all with a free 4Gb SD card (one that the 720 doesn't recognise no doubt)
I give up! |
Its 2036mb on the download to the computer, BUT its like 1984mb when actually installed on the GPS. NAmer map installs a bit smaller at about 1936mb.

Hiya all, can anyone tell me what size the new 710 map should be?
I've a Go 720 and am being offered the 710 maps but it's only 930mb. When installed I don't get speech recognition. I called TomTom but got some kind of magician who told me it's the right map but compressed better than usual. He reckons they can get 4gb of map data into 35mb
Anyway, am I being offered the right map by Home, or is it all up the left?
Thanks,
Rolf |

No, you are NOT being offered the NA 7.10 map but the USA & Canada 7.10 map which does NOT allow for speech recognition or have nearly as much detail or poi's as the much larger NA 2GB 7.10 map. |

Received my Map Update yesterday. Needed a question through TomTom website, and a follow up with information already supplied in first question But yesterday had the reply from (Ryan S. (UK))
Dear Mr Jones,
Thank you for contacting TomTom Customer Support.
We are pleased to inform you that the latest map version 7.10 has been added to your account.
To download and install your Map that you have purchased, please click on the link below:-
http://www.tomtom.com/5169
If you do not have sufficient space to install your Map onto your TomTom. We recommend that you obtain a new 2GB SD card with a minimum read speed of 10mb/s or higher from your local high street retailer such as PCWorld, Currys, Maplins or other high street electrical retailers etc.
With Best Regards
The TomTom Customer Support Team
Started the download at 17:00, aborted it at 18:00 when it froze. Restarted it and it finally finished at 00:30.
Previously had:
TomTom Go 720T
Application Version 7.221, Map: Western Europe v705.1480
Now have Map: Western Europe v710.1561 (size on disk 1.66Gb)
Deleted original map from on board memory, copied the new map from the SD Card. All working OK. Needed to copy the mapsettings.cfg from the old map folder to retrieve my favourites and poi settings, and the speed camera files.
No drama from TomTom Customer Service, all sorted within 3 working days.

My full map version is v710.1561, the same as yours.
I think what they are doing is giving people the same map that htey are offering for sale - if you persist in asking for the "latest map upgrade"

Did your device ship with version of the map on it or did TT upgrade it for you?
If it came out of the box with this version what is the TT part number on your box (white label stuck underneath)
Thanks
