Glad to see I am not the only one annoyed by this .

With such enriched content, get ready for tomorrow and buy a new map today with the introduction offer of up to 50% discount. Map of Western Europe was €99.95 now available at €49.95.
So if you buy the map in France you get it for 50% off, but if you buy it from the UK its -

OK guys, when I'm reading the UK sites ang mags, all the prices are generally without VAT. In other parts of Europe all the prices generally includes the VAT. I think TomTom shows also the sterling prices VAT included.
When you calculate the discount, you have to deduct the VAT from price, then get off the 50% and add the VAT of your own. No one else included TomTom doesn't pay your tax.
That doesn't explain all the diffenrecies in percentages, but some.
For example one map for Finland:
- Eastern Europe Total EUR 39,95 VAT (22.00%) EUR 6,38 _________________ Harry (TT GO720T)
Yep, just dredged up that TomTom e-mail to check what it did say...
Subject header states: 'New maps 50% discount'.
The big animated header announces in quite large letters, 'New Maps 50% discount'.
On the left 'toolbar' with the title 'In this issue' the top most menu item states, '50% discount on your brand new map!'
In the main subject area the second paragraph states, '50% discount on your brand new map', followed by the following spiel, 'Your TomTom is designed to be kept up-to-date. Now, you can treat yourself and your TomTom with a brand new map at a 50% discount! These days, no less than 15% of the road network and 20% of the Points of Interest change every year. That's why TomTom covers changes 24/7, to keep you up to date with the best maps available. Your TomTom is ready for tomorrow, so get your TomTom a new map today!'.
The clickable link then follows with the words, 'Your new map, now at a 50% discount'.
As bazzza had stated there is no mention anywhere of the words 'up to' in the e-mail, so if you took up the offer you should be getting 50% off whatever map you buy. Otherwise it's false advertising.
Now, my particular dilemma is this. With having a One V1 would it really be worthwhile buying a new map for it even at 50% off, or to forgo TomTom altogether and go the, what's becoming more popular, PDA route to proper OS navigation...
Well whatever, I'd be interested in the outcome, if any, of this particular money off map issue.

Rob, What do you mean by OS style navigation? if you are thinking about Ordnance Survey Maps on a PDA they will show you where you are (Memory Map) but it will not provide and routing instructions.
It is possible (on a decent PDA with high speed processor) to run TomTom for the spoken commands but use Memory Map as the positional display, for this you would need to port split the GPS signal using something like Fransons GPS Gate - Mike

I received exactly the same e-mail as you bazzza, 50% off, NOT up to 50% but 50% OFF. I had a quick look and it doesn't apply to what was my 5.21 mapping. Glad I changed to iGO mapping some time back.

Windows Mobile 6 (And some Windows Mobile 5) PDAs have GPS Gate style software built into the OS - Look for GPS in the Settings -- System area.

I know this, but the MicroSoft GPS splitter works on some platforms but not others, for that reason I don't trust it - it was fine on the HTC Universal (XDA Exec) but newer devices have not been anywhere as predictable, this is why I use a port splitter utility these days to ensure the device behaves the way I want, and not Uncle Sam - Mike

The story so far.
Me:
Why are you advertising map updates at 50% off. A price of £41-95 reduced to 29-95 is not 50% off. 50% off leaves a price of £20-97. Your advert is misleading and illegal. It does not say "up to 50% off."
Explanation please.
Them:
TomTom have approximately 25 maps for sale in our new map shop at an average 50% discounted price. The actual discounted price depends on the particular map that you decide to purchase. Due to the difference in discounted prices we have made both the original and the discounted price clearly visible on the map shop pages so that the actual price is known in advance, before any purchase has been made.
Me:
Your advertising does not state that it is an average reduction and even if it did it is a misleading advert which, in English law is illegal.

Me:
Your email to me did not say anything about average discount and as far as I am concerned your offer to me was 50% discount and I cannot accept your response as being accurate.
The average discount is not 50%, it is 33.08%.

After Andy's calculations I'm with you on this one, I deleted the email so couldn't remember how it was worded.
If you don't get any reasonable response from TT, perhaps we could all bombard them with emails expressing dissatisfaction with their marketing techniques.
I was playing "Devils Advocate" when I pointed out the paragraph on their website, but Andy's hard work has convinced me just how misleading their marketing on this matter is.
Good luck Bazzza _________________ Go Classic

Eh? The VAT is irrelevant because it's applied to both the discounted and undiscounted price. For example, without VAT:
