Tricky GPS Feature questions

Hello,

I have a few questions after experiencing my purchase of my Tom Tom 3rd edition. I plan to return it as I soon realize there will be certain situations in the future which I require or desire certain features. Any help in answering my questions would be greatly appreciated.

1. Which brand of GPS's allow the user to scroll ahead while navigating? (I've found I can not do this with my Tom Tom 3rd edition and would have to navigate to another screen "Browse map" which isn't practical while driving.

2. Which brand of GPS (lowest model-Street Pilot not included) allows the use of an external antenna? Note: The antenna mounting hole can not be located on the flip up antenna as on the Garmin Nuvi350, as the GPS must be mounted flat inside the center console of the vehicle.

3. Which brand of GPS does the night time display feature come on automatically?

I know these are very particular questions, but I've have found difficulty in locating the answers. A experienced enthusiast's help would be appreciated again. Thanks!

1. I would hope none as this would be in the same league as operating a mobile phone whilst driving!

2. The position of the mounting hole may vary from model to model, not just different brands.

3. Most brands do. However it may vary from model to model - even my 2 year old i3 has this function.

It sounds like you want to mount the Sat nav in a particular way. It might be better to explain what you wish to do and then ask for specific make and model numbers of units that might fit the purpose.

1. Scrolling ahead is a feature available on some Garmin's, I can't confirm if this is the case for Magellan. Definitely not in the same league as operating as mobile phone. But that is neither here nor there.

2. Understood, particular models would be helpful here.

3. Again, makes and models would be appreciated.

The Sat Nav would be mounted in the center console of the vehicle, blocking the regular antenna, hence all the questions.

What does "scrolling ahead" actually do or look like, please?

Is it something different to either
1. "tap/dragging" on the Map page, or
2. the list of images of all the 'decision points' that you get from details / browse as images on the TomTom.

"Scrolling ahead" = "tapping/dragging" on the map,

any suggestions?

Must admit I would find that useful, especially being able to tap the normal navigation screen to get the info on an approaching POI.
At the moment you have to switch to the Browse map screen, re-centre it on your present GPS position, wait for the stupid"you are here" blob to go away, zoom in, and THEN tap on the POI icon.

Well what do you expect?
1.Maybe the feature you want doesn't exist. You say it is available on "some" Garmins. Buy one of those then. If no-one who reads these forums has one that does, they can't answer, can they?

2. You ask which brands can accept an external antenna. MOST do, but the people who read this forum will probably own ONE brand of Satnav and aren't going to research an entire list for you, if 99% of them don't come up to your requirement #1.
Also, not knowing your exact dashboard layout makes it rather hard.

3. As #2 - MOST do, but if they don't do #1 what is the point of listing them?

If YOU find a model that can do your "scroll ahead" (I don't know any), then you could come back asking if anyone who owns one can answer your other questions.

Sorry for the slight rant, but there's no point getting cross that you don't get the answers you want, when you make the questions impossible to answer.
