I have used TomTom navigator on a PDA for many years, I prefer to plan my own itineraries, When doing this as a point on a map, it is important on motorways a dual carriageways to select the correct carriageway. Otherwise you find that you can be first north then south then back north again.
It is easy to overcome this by enlarging the map and using a stylus.
What happens with a stand alone system where one uses a finger as there is no stylus.
Does one have to resort to a biro.
Only asking because I fancy the larger screen offered by some stand alone systems. _________________ Slow Learner |

Avoid the TomTom One Third Edition which can only provide Itinerary planning via a menu work around which isn't ideal.
For on screen selections just use your thumb/ finger nail, zoomed in you can easily make the correct selection on the PNA screen - Mike |

It's still possible to use a stylus with the touch screen the same way you have been doing, if thats the way you are comfortable with. _________________ Want to get lost, forget your Tomtom next time you go out?

I use a biro - standard office issue with the cap on, and use the pointed end of the cap Or an old PDA stylus. Too clumsy to use fingernails for delicate work. |

i was a pda user starting right back from tomtom 2 and as i was forced to upgrade i decided i had had enough of carrying a huge piece of metal around that always had to be protected ,so went with the tt720 ,i've used my fingers the whole time and find it quite easy, well much easier than using a finger on a pda anyway _________________ TomTom 5001 |

Thanks to all for the replies, its as I suspected I need to keep my stylus, or grow my finger nails. However if one needs a stylus/biro / long fingernail then why isn't a stylus supplied, I am not concerned with the cost but at least there would hopefully be somewhere to store it.

99% of the time a prod with the finger will suffice, I only use the finger nail if I need to get information about a camera ID while in browse map mode (normal users wouldn't do this to be honest) - Mike |

Unless your fingers are much bigger than average, you don't need a stylus.
The only thing that can get a bit fiddly is text entry on the on-screen keyboard, so If you're doing LOADS of typing of long names, it might be useful, but for day to day use a finger is just fine. |

Andy
Are you saying that it is possible to select the correct carriageway on a dual carriageway or motorway with your finger?

If you zoom in enough to SEE there are two carriageways then yes.
But I don't often navigate to a particular spot like that when I'm actually driving. Doing it at arms length would be difficult. Much more likely when I'm sitting at the computer doing a map correction or editing a POI or camera position and I would tend to instinctively use the very tip of my finger or a finger nail for very fine positioning. |
