I imagine that many users here are aware of the Open Street Map project.
For anyone who has not heard of it, Open Street Map is an open source project to map the planet. It has the potential to provide a free, up-to-date, non-copyrighted maps which could be used for a multitude of useful purposes.
As I map-geek, I like this idea and I'd like to contribute.
In order to contribute mapping data to OSM, one needs a GPS unit capable of data-logging, ideally at 1-second intervals and having suitable capacity to log at this rate for a whole morning or afternoon.
My day-to-day GPS is a TomTom Rider, which doesn't have the facility to log tracks.
I am going to need a new GPS to use for OSM mapping. I don't have a fortune to spend, so I'd like something simple and cheap that I can use handheld or mounted on a bicycle.
I don't want to buy the wrong thing - I've had a hunt through spec sheets and while I've seen some that look suitable (RoyalTek RGM-3800), for all know it could be rubbish.
Can anyone recommend a cheap GPS data-logger that can be easily connected to a Wintel PC for track downloads?
Thanks! |

You can save some money and add the NMEA Logger application to your Rider - this will do what you need without the need for new hardware see Here to process the data use GPSBabel which will convert the data to the type required for OSM - save some money and use the Rider as a starter for gathering the data needed for OSM, I use Josm to post process the data from my TomTom (via GPSBabel) when creating the map data - Mike |

Hi Mike,
Wow! I had no idea that my TomTom supported other software. This is just what I need - and no money to spend. Fantastic. Thank you!
