I always thought that the spellings of name's and places' go back to when the majority of the population couldn't spell, and regualar spellings got changed due to it. Now the counsils do it so nothing much has really changed.

Chelsea Stadium? CHELSEA STADIUM? I think you are speaking of the hallowed turf known as Stamford Bridge, Sir (or Madam). | Nope, I think he meant Chelsea football club's football pitch. |
Of course I meant Chelsea's Stadium...........I think it's obvious there is only ONE Chelsea, unfortunately not everyone knows stadium names so I thought the bridge would be ambiguous - I will know better next time! this year they seem to have two teams, one that turns up and one that doesn't! At least the missus ain't giving me grief about money buying the premiership! Also still unbeaten at the bridge!!!!! (How many years is it?????)[/b] |

Hey, no offence meant. Still unbeaten at The Bridge in the Premiership for 69 games now, I think. I was there when we beat the Liverpool record of 63 and we've since gone another 6 to make 69 in the Premiership (and I was there for all of those except the 5-0 drubbing of Man. City). However, we have lost at home to Charlton in the League Cup on penalties, and to Barcelona in the Champions' League (I was there for that, too). _________________ Tim |

When a name ends with an 'S' the apostrophe can be be either before or after the name.
So James's and James' are both correct. |

Does that only apply to proper nouns? I had an argument with a journalist once about princess' and princess's. To me, the first one means nothing and the second means "belonging to the princess". _________________ Tim |

According to 'The Oxford Guide to English Usage':
Nouns ending in s add 's for the singular possessive, e.g.
boss's, Burns's, Charles's, Father Christmas's, Hicks's, St James's Square, Tess's, Thomas's
To form the plural possessive they add an apostrophe to the s of the plural in the normal way, e.g.
bosses', the Joneses' dog, the octopuses' tentacles, the Thomases' dog
Names ending in -es pronounced iz are treated like plurals and take only an apostrophe (following the pronunciation, which is iz not iziz), e.g.
Bridges', Hodges', Moses', Riches'
Polysyllables not accented on the last or second last syllable can take the apostrophe alone, but the form with -'s is equally acceptable, e.g.
Barnabas' or Barnabas's
Nicholas' or Nicholas's
It goes on about usage in classical works and liturgical archaism, but I think that's enough for tonight!
And yes, I know I'm a pedant!  _________________ Anita

Thanks for that, Anita, although I'd argue (not with you of course) that Moses isn't pronounced iz at the end; more like uz. Anyway, back to the King's Road for me... _________________ Tim |

According to the Apostrophe Society lady on Radio 5 a couple of weeks ago, 's is wrong for stuff ending in s. It really should be Dennises, not Dennis's. So I changed my name to DennisN so that there wouldn't be any argument about DennisN's literary prowess. Don't blame me - I just listen to the tranny, not speak on it. Oh, and I may have heard it wrongly, what with all this hair inside my ears and nose. _________________ Dennis

I think the lady was talking about the "greengrocer's apostrophe", where they offer for sale carrot's and pea's and cos's.
If there was more than one of you ( what a thought!!) you'd be Dennises, but your white van is Dennis's.
But I think you really knew that already. _________________ Anita

My surname is Jones.
So from what I read here it's:
Joneses - non possessive collection (my family);
Jones's - possessive singular;
Jones' - possessive collection
So it's:
Keeping up with the Joneses.
Keith Jones's tomtom.
The Jones' family tree.
Is that right? |

I find that particular example a tricky one, because the Jones family is singular and wouldn't have an apostrophe at all. I'm not sure whether that should be the Jones family tree or the Joneses' family tree - or even the Jones family's tree!
But according to The Oxford Guide to English Usage it should be the Joneses' car. _________________ Anita
