Firstly, what is the difference between a hard and soft reset?
Secondly, how do you do a hard reset?
Thanks,

A soft reset is the same as if you would restart your desktop or laptop computer. A hard reset is equivalent to inserting the recovery CD and copletely reinstalling the operating system. After a hard reset all your nrew programs and personal files are gone.
Doing a hard reset is different per PocketPC. Here's a good introduction: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=225725 _________________ Lutz

Soft Reset: This just resets the device without clearing data and programs installed. This should be the first thing you try if your device has locked up and is no longer responding as it will terminate all programs but preserve your data (unsaved data will be lost) and user settings/installed programmes etc.
Hard Reset: This will clear all data/settings/user installed programs (on some (all?) pocket pc devices the address book/other organiser data may survive) - effectively returning the device to its 'out of the box' state.
How? Without knowing your device model its hard to say what you have to do to initiate either type of reset. _________________ --<br>

Many thanks for your help.
My PPC is an Ipaq 3970, which I purchased second hand. There is quite a bit of stuff on it that I wouldn't use that the previous owner put on and I would like to start off with a new "out the box" system.
I also have TTN2, do I install all of this onto my storage card or do I install some of it to main memeory and the maps to storage? Can you select where to install?
Many thanks,
Mike |

From the getting started guide:
Soft Reset:
" My Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC is not responding or an application hangs
Perform a soft reset of your Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC:
1 Insert the stylus into the unit reset switch at the bottom of your Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC
2 Press the switch for 1 second"
"Perform a hard reset of your Compaq
iPAQ Pocket PC
CAUTION: Because most of
the applications and data you
install on your Compaq iPAQ
Pocket PC are held in memory,
you will need to reinstall them if
you perform a hard reset.
1 Press and hold the two
outside application buttons
2 Insert the stylus into the unit
reset switch at the bottom of
your Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC
3 Press the switch for
5 seconds
4 To reactivate your Compaq
iPAQ Pocket PC, insert the
stylus into the unit reset
switch and press the switch
for 1 second or connect your
Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC to
the AC Adapter" |

You can select where to install. I recommend the following
Application: Storage card
GPS driver: main memory (it won't install to storage card anyhow)
maps: storage card
Make sure you backup the "TomTom Navigator.axs" file before you do the hard reset - it contains your Activation Code.. _________________ Lutz
