where is the best place in the car to place the antenna for the 230? how should i set the whole thing up in the car (ie, placement of the unit itself, for example)? |

Placing the GR-230 is best under the windscreen on the dashboard. If you have an external antenna for this, then place it anywhere on the roof of the car or bonnet. |

If it's an external patch antenna then it will have a magnetic base which will stick to the roof of the car. |

Hi mjolnir,
I suspect I have the same package as you do - the aerial isn't required unless you have a uv reflective windscreen. However, I use mine stuck to the roof next to the radio aerial running into the boot - this allows me to put my GR230 in the boot and when i'm not using the gps all that is visible from the outside is the mount for my pda - plus I don't have another blue flashing light inside the car distracting me.

Yeah, sorta mucked around with it 2day and found the seek time to be instantaneous with the antenna. since my car's (clio) antenna is smack in the middle near the front, i assume the antenna's cable will run down the middle of the car roof? then into the boot from the top? have to experiment with this... |

My radio aerial is mounted centrally at the rear of the car, I stuck the gps aerial box next to it so it wouldn't stand out - it's far less obtrusive than my car phone aerial - I run the cable down a few inches into the seal around the boot and the actual gps mouse sits in a box in the boot (I have tos of stuff in the back of the car all the time) if I could be bothered I'd wire it up so it was charged continously but I only normally need to charge it every other day anyway so not too worried about it.

Yep it's totally rain proof - not even sure if it's got anything in it to be affected by water (being an aerial). What I did find was that the base of the unit was weaker than the magnet so when i took the unit off when i put the car through a car wash the base stayed behind but this was easily fixed with a drop of superglue (to join the two halves more securely - not to glue it to my roof <g>) - the unit's been on my roof for more than 3 months now and works very well.
