|

Tomtom have a plan to release the version 7 for Pocket PC (assuming Tele Atlas is not taken over by Garmin in which case it may need to start from version one of Navtech maps from Nokia)
The version 7 is being beta tested expect a release within two/three months. It is not going to be a free release |

I can not say how I have the information. The information is correct.
The version 7 is under test and Tomtom is expected to release the product within a few months. It is not a free upgrade. |

I would be surprised if there is a new release of navigator that can be bought without also buying new maps.
I hope it has text-to-speech. And doesn't look like a point release with no new features or no new looks. |

From what I know.
The version 7 is more like an update than new application.
The menu have been improved. The user have a more control over how you want to display the information on the display while driving. The overall look is much batter.
Tomtom is trying to keep the application separate to maps. |

I just asked tomtom support when map share would be out for Navigator, they said it will be in version 7 (or above) IF it is released for PPCs. |

I suppose that for those North of the Border it will be free, like most things that we South of the border have to pay for ? |

What are you on FrequentFlyer? Is this some reference to your nationalistic views? If so, can we stick to the topic and leave politics out of it? |

Adam, this story is about the proposed buyout of TA by TomTom, then Garmin and then TomTom again, with Garmin having pulled out. The requested link was about TomTom Navigator 7 being under test. _________________ Tim |

Tom Tom support confirmed in an email to me today that Mapshare will be in Navigator 7, but have no release date yet.
Tom Tom's third quarter results (see Tom Tom web site - News Archive) emphasise fantastic growth in Portable Navigation Devices, turnover and profit margins - and omit any reference to their PDA/mobile software - which has never been as profitable as selling device and software combined. Earlier News Releases have noted that the market for PDA software is not growing in the way that PND sales are growing.
I think there is limited invetsment in this department - and so it takes a little longer. |

TomTom are obviously doing well, but ignoring the PDA market could be costly.
With the number of mobile phones now coming with GPS as standard, there is a large market out there. It wouldn't take a lot for the PDA/mobile community to transfer to an alternate product, such as CoPilot.
I would be surprised if there is still a large market for PND's in 5 years time. Intergration is what it happening and TomTom need to understand this.
Sad for me to say, but I have been a TomTom customer for many years, since they produced products under the brand name of Palmtop Software and Route Planner was their main product, but they seem to be ignoring their core customer group, those of us that have already spent many $/£ on their software and upgrades since. Maybe one day they will release their new versions on a PDA platform first and then follow this with PND releases? Or is that too much to hope for?!! Seems like PDA customers are second best at present. |
