There definitely seem to be 2 camps. Those who have no problems with Firmware upgrades after 2.7 and those that do.

Guys, Thanks for responding to what is quite an old thread.

Seamaster, I too have always updated and had no problems, and had probably used 3.4 for months before any issues. Looked at all the other users complaining and couldn't understand why. Then all of a sudden got the satellite lock problem. Put up with it for ages thinking it might be 'atmospheric'. Then thought it might be recent POI download, tried running without any, did hard resets, V8 & V9 maps, new batteries, WAAS setting on and off - you name it I tried it - but only cure for me was to go back to 2.7.

Have e-mailed Garmin explaining problem but guess unless they've had lots of complaints nothing will happen. Will post any useful response (if)received.

I've emailed many times. Usual hard reset, remove POIs answers. Last time i e-mailed i said please do not tell me to do a Hard Reset, Soft Reset, Reflash the firmware, it's the POIs, it's the wind etc... So they didn't. They just ignored it....

Im just sticking with version 2.7 now, cant be bothered with any of the newer ones now, tried a couple of different ones & they just give problems after a week or 2.

Like what has been said before by someone else on this thread, if it aint broke dont try & fix it Wink

Took a while for Garmin to come back, and their answer was to do a hard re-set. I knew that wouldn't work, so told them again of all the other things I'd also tried.

Quicker response this time, where they've suggested I send in my i3 for repair. Can't find my receipt so waiting for them to confirm they will repair for free without it, but it's unclear what they think is broken. Still, if they'll do for free I guess I've nothing to lose - other than the use of my now fully functioning baby - is even capturing satellites quickly when I'm too impatient to wait for a satellite lock before moving off.

I've been updating my i3 with all the upgrade software and it's now on 3.30 but I'll be dropping back to 2.7 again from tonight as the king thing keeps freezing the map - which tends to happen when the proximity alert kicks in. (??)

Just had a reply from Garmin. As I can't find my receipt they want to charge me £72 for a repair, which I suppose in principle is OK, but I'm not convinced its a hardware fault and that it actually needs a 'repair'.

I'll therefore keep my money and continue with the old firmware - which is still performing superbly.

@CJ57

That is disgraceful . Instead of them investigating why old firmware is great than the recent ones, they try to cash in on it (hardware fault should be present no matter what firmware you have). I can not understand why the new firmware is so damn bad that it makes a good working i3 turn in to a unstable device.

Update: I've just come back from a 1400 miles round trip across to Holland, through Belgium to France and back on the latest versions of software, voices and maps and not had a single problem.

I've just signed up to express my utmost thanks to everyone here for all the information posted about the StreetPilot i3 firmwares!

I was all set to throw my i3 out of the window this week because of the stupidly long time it took to get a lock on the satellites. I mean you wouldn't believe how frustrating it has been; I've even contemplated getting a TomTom.

But after reading all the great posts on here (and other thread) it dawned on me that my problem might be a firmware issue - no amount of hard resetting worked for me.

So I downgraded from 3.2 to 2.7, and I can tell you the difference is amazing! For example, this morning I had a satellite lock before I had chance to reverse off the drive. Previously I'd only get a lock when I was almost at my final destination. Even using an external antenna appeared to make little or no difference with 3.2. But now with 2.7 I don't need the antenna - I only bought the damn antenna because I thought my windscreen was blocking the satellites.

Anyways, sorry for the long post - just wanted to say thanks guys / gals!

Interesting.... As you can see from my sig I'm now on 3.4 and happy....

Much faster satellite lock
No longer have to put to end of drive to get lock
Better timed instructions
Faster re-calculate

The difference - i was driving a car with an Anthermic windscreen and an antenna, however I'm now using one without the Anthermic coating and no antenna. No problems for 5 weeks now.......

Bit of a mystery to me.... 2.7 seemed like the answer for so long....

Not tried 3.4, might give it a go if I run into problems with 2.7

Thanks for that.

Good luck Paul. Mine had been in the same car, so can't work out why 3.4 became a pronblem after so long, but I'm sure 2.7 is even faster than when my 3.4 was working. Smythers, I too nearly threw out my i3!

I stuck it out with 3.40 as long as I could with my i3.

It was just flakey as hell.

Everything was fine, so long as I was in nav mode, and I waited until it had calculated a route, before moving. Otherwise crashes in map mode, or crashes during route calculation.

It was almost so predictable, I'd turn on, set a destination, set off, it would acquire reasonably quickly, start calculating a route, then crash.

Not good when you're moving.

If I waited for it to fully calculate before I started moving - it was reasonably stable - just the odd crash, now and then.

Back on 2.70, no crashes, whether I wait for it to calculate a route, or otherwise (I actually don't bother waiting, now).

I've got a C510T, now - and I'm loath to upgrade the firmware in it (currently 5.80, which doesn't seem released, and 6.00 is the latest) because of my experiences with the i3.
