PDA/GPS for walkers

I am new to this site and you may have covered this already. If so, I apologise. I am a keen walker, in the Lake District particularly, and want to replace my old GPS (Magellan Pioneer) and Handheld PC (Jornada 680).

I would like a solution ideally where the GPS is waterproof and has an electronic altimeter, and the handheld PC uses PocketPC and synchronises with Outlook, Word and Excel. I know there is a multitude of solutions ranging from (1) separate PDA and GPS connected by bluetooth or cable, (2) PDA with a GPS attachment (CF card or sleeve), or (3) a single unit. (3) would be ideal, but as far as I know only the Mio-tech 680 fits the bill. Any recommendations?

Finally, I have been looking at digital mapping systems. The MemoryMap and Anquet maps look good as they have 3D, and Fugawi is a cheaper option. With all these purchases, are there any bundles that you can recommend? I have found some on www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk.

Personally I would go for separate PDA and BT GPS receiver.

- independent batteries, supposed to work longer
- independent viewing angles (unlike with a CF GPS). (The Mio is not bad because the antenna can swivel)
- you may not need the PDA all the time so it can be stowed away while the GPS keeps running
- easier to waterproof (imagine a CF GPS or the Mio in an Otterbox...)

The iPAQ 2210 may be a good choice for you, and if you are into statistics and stuff you may want to look at the Royaltek RBT3000 - a nice little data logger...
