Just upgraded from the Mitac 168 to the Mitac P550, with the view to using the WiFi option when travailing to check emails ect. So far, not impressed with the WiFi signal strength/quality. I did manage to get some sort of signal while I was in the airport, but for some reason the connection would keep dropping out. I am at the moment connected to my home wireless router, the signal strength is showing only two bars on the PDA, and I am sat directly in front of the router. I have had the usual 350/550 problem's i.e. the poor battery performance, which I have managed to sort out, but seem to have hit a brick wall with the WiFi problem, unless of course this is as good as it gets!!! Any kind of help/suggestion would be appreciated.

WiFi is intentioanally a short range technology. On a good day with excellent conditions you could possibly get 100 metres from the access point/repeater. PDAs are not good with WiFi as many of the internal aerials are placed where your hands hold the unit - which significantly affects performance.

Although there are many 100's of thousands of WiFi installations, most will be secure. That is only for the use of certain people/devices (e.g. company and home WiFi). There are lots of WiFi 'Hot Spots' where public access is available (e.g airports)- but many of these make a small charge for access (or you subscribe to a provider). After all it costs money to install the infrastructure and network in the first place.

I think aerials are always the problem, as all the discussions here with Sat Nav's and TMC.

I have had a very strong broadband wireless signal at home on my laptop, when my Nokia N95 phone wi-fi signal strength/quality would keep dropping out.

Thanks Phil, I understand what you are saying but I did excpect a bit better performance from the hand held. I like GJF states, can be sat next to my router and still only manage a couple of bars on the signal strength.
Just thought it may be a better option for checking emils when traviling instead of the laptop. Guess not!
