Dave Burrows previously posted that the Silverstone bypass and the new layout for the A43/M40 junction were present in TTN3. (see NEW ROADS IN 2003 thread). How can this be?
Both of these developments (I believe) were opened in September 2002. TTN3 has data labelled "October 2003" where TTN2 was "December 2002".

Neil, I went on the information you provided.
Quote: | A43 Silverstone bypass, opened September 2002.
The A43 no longer runs through the village of Silverstone. |
If you take a look at the TomTom map and also http://www.a43project.plus.com/introduction.htm it doesn't run through the center of Silverstone (atleast as far as I can tell). I don't know the Silverstone bypass so can't guarantee it's there, but you said "A43 no longer runs through the village of Silverstone" and it doesn't look like it runs through the center to me, it bows east doesn't it as per the above link ? |

Hi All,
Has anybody with TTNav3 actually driven the A43/M40 yet? If you have, could you report back on your findings and experience of TTNav3’s accuracy in that area?
That road is pretty close to me, but I haven’t got TTNav3 yet. Would any kind sole care to lend me an iPAQ with TTNav3 on it, so I may do a survey of the road system in that area? Dave, may I borrow your H2210 and TTNav3?

OK, I can confirm that TT3 does NOT have the Silverstone bypass nor the Syresham bypass. It does, however, have the updated A43/M40 and A43/M1 junctions and the new dual carriageway near the M40. So it seems 60% of it has been updated but not the other 40% ;(
If memory serve me right, the Silverstone bypass was the first section completed to comply with the Grand Prix dates on July last year so not sure why it hasnt been included! This is not a minor road either...
Cheers |

It definitely opened in 2002. I thought it was scheduled for "Summer" and opened in September with the other parts of the A43 improvement scheme, but it is possible it was opened early for the Grand Prix that year.
The BBC News site at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2265663.stm states that the road opened on 18th September 2002, but had been partially open (one lane each way) before that.
Given that this road is not in the TeleAtlas data of October 2003, we might not even see the M6 Toll Road in TTN4 and have to wait until TTN5! You surely have to agree that that would be an unacceptable delay for a major road (2006).

Presumably because it's based on data they got from TeleAtlas in October 2003, but since TeleAtlas take a (very long) while to incorporate new roads into their data set, only contains major roads from somewhere between September 2002 and April 2003 as far as we can judge from the mapping errors in TTN2 and TTN3. As for minor roads, there are residential areas that have not been mapped in the last seven years to my knowledge.

I agree, that would be unacceptable.

As explained in hundreds of other posts, the Oct 2003 maps are the release date for TeleAtlas maps. Just because it doesn't have roads in that were around in June 2003 doesn't mean it's not an Oct 2003 Map Release! It can take anything from 6 months to 18 months to get a road into a map and to have the new product released to the consumer.
The only difference is that the 6-18 month estimated timeframe does depend on TeleAtlas or NAVTEQ knowing about the road. If they haven't been informed, then it simply won't appear. They scout their data from many sources but most of the sources will get their data from the Highways agency and if for whatever reason there's been a screw up at the same source, then you could find extra delays. |
