I purchased the Navman S90i last Saturday. It all works fine except for the same old problem. TCM. TCM works fine in the house but will no work in the car. I live in Salisbury City Center so signal should not be a issue. I have tried the aerial in different place on the window screen even put the aerial outside the car. Would be grateful for any help please. Michael. Confused

Hi TaxiMike

You could attache the unit to the car ariel which usually solves the problem - or at least gives you your very best chance of signal coverage

I have an s90i too - do you find it has a slow (very) response to re-routing if you via off course (try it!). Not in knowing you are off course, but the re-route

Would appreciate your findings

Do you have the PocketGPSWorld speed camera database loaded?

I'm assuming that navman are still using the wet wire. So try this before spending money on conversions.

Start with the device on the right side of the windscreen. run the wet wire up the right pillar and across the top of the windcreen to the left side of the car. Ensure you unravel all of the wire as this can affect the signal. finally the T section which should now be neer or to the left of the rear veiw mirror should be placed horisontally up or down. Ensure all the wire is quite tight and you should see something.
This setup is a little directional so consider taking a drive. If this fails then you'll have to hard wire it to the car ariel which is preffered by most as this gives a substatial inprovment to the signal.

I've had my T1 for about two years now and I'm still using the wet wire!

Thank you for your reply. Will try connecting to car aerial and hope this will solve the problem. Have not found re-routing a problem as yet but if I do will let you know. Not loaded the the PocketGPSWorld speed camera database yet.

Removed all my custom POIs today and guess what - my Navman s90i worked like a dream. No slow menu response, no sticky maps, no problem re-routing

Running on Navmans directions speed camera database now and all is well!

Thank you Dom for your help. As you see from Xtrasellers reply the S90i comes with TMC built in and the aerial is a single wire (no T). Thanks for trying to help. I did try xtraseller idea of connecting it to the car aerial but it did not work. It could be that I did not connect it right, will try again on Sunday when I have more free time to spare. Funny thing is that I tried it again on the widow screen and it did work for about 30 mins. Taximike.

You'll need to look up the posts about ariel conversions as it requires a few adapters and a special splitter. A quick look finds this.

I'm sure if mike is watching he may add an appropriate link! Wink

Edit. Just re read your post and notice your 30min of clarity. I thought to point out that the reception I get is far from perfect and I do consider the point of connecting to the car ariel. On a typical journey I sometimes only get periodic connections that are enough to update the tmc.

Set up and go for a drive!

Is your windscreen a rapid clear? Or does it have any other special features which may result in interference of the TMC signal, which was received in your house through plain glass (I presume).

Perhaps, just for the sake of experimentation, you could try placing the unit in different places in the car and identify if something like the windscreen could be affecting TMC reception.

Obviously, your GPS won't be much use to you attached to the rear window (if that's where best reception is observed) but it might be a pointer.

If the problem does lie with a coated windscreen, is there an external TMC receiver available for this unit or does it rely entirely upong the built in antenna?

I think you have identified the problem. My car is a Peugeot, which has a UV window screen. The S90i has a single wired aerial that plugs into the unit. Perhaps I could extend the aerial to the back window?

Also will look into aerial converters, adapters etc. I do have a spare mag mount aerial sitting in my boot. Perhaps this could be the answer!!

Thanks to you all,

Mike

Yup - Peugeot commonly use Athermic windscreens, which ruin FM signals.

As I've just stated in another thread, would like to say here that TMC on my S90i works really well, and it's only via the wet wire, too!

Went from Bedford to London last night (mainly M1 and then north circular); and then London to Loughborough (via Stevenage), so A1M.

Well pleased!

Pleased to learn that you are receiving TMC on your S90i without problems and with wet wire. What vehicle are you using? Perhaps I will try again when I go to London the signal might be better on the A303/M3.

M3 is very hit and miss on my 750, so there is your benchmark. In to london and it works well, so little I can help you with there! Confused

So what would you do stick with Tom Tom 910 for the TMC or is the S90i far better? The reason in asking is I'm think of changing my console?

Cheers

Interesting use of colour there! Until recently the Navmans have been regarded as having a slightly superior TMC reception, with the wet cable or extra ariel. Early days yet but it looks set to continue that way. However this is not etirely the fault of the satnav companies, as TMC is run by outside sources and is set to be improved over the coming year or two. My money remains with Navman.

Maybe read this too.
