hi there

i have a v2 tomtom europe with the sd card slot.
i have copied the maps off a v3 europe on to tomtom home and onto my desktop by exploring the tomtom
but every time i try installing the maps onto the old tomtom it crashes via tomtom home or doing it via explorer the maps seem to copy over but when you turn the unit on it comes up with the "NO MAPS FOUND" error
any ideas on how to fix this??

cheers

I'm not sure that what you are trying to do will work (or is even legal within the licensing of your TomTom).

I guess it might not be a legally sound thing to do but is it likely to be to do with the sd card and internal memory issue or just a legal thing because i havent had this problem with older tomtom's ie. 720 running program on to a One v2 with a new sd card.

any help would be nice

Legally it is outside of the scope of the license that you have for the device (s), each map can only be activated on a single device at any point in time, you can transfer maps to other devices but would have to contact TomTom for activation codes to get t working.

I would also not recommend installing software intended for one device on to a different model, the chances are when/ if it all goes wrong TomTom will offer nothing in way of a waranty - Mike

how would you enter a activation code though if all the unit will do is turn on and say you have no maps?
Has anyone tried this before?
If you brought a tomtom for yourself then one for your wife but her one is newer you would clearly want the new maps on your device to?
but you wouldnt want to pay out for the maps for the old one when you have them on the new one.
It was easy with the old go series, why did they have to go mess things around.

Thanks for all the help so far though.

Because they have slightly more control over their s/w. Question After all they are predominantly a s/w company that sells a packaged solution. Their business is about selling s/w (inc mapping data - for which they have (had) to pay a substantial amount of money). You could swap the words "my best friend" for "wife" in your statement above and that way leads to piracy. Why do you suppose they have been making the PDA based Navigator s/w less attractive each release? We may never see a V7 Navigator due to the excessive piracy of previous Navigator products.

Sorry to seem a bit harsh but that's the name of the game nowadays. When I first entered the IT industry (it wasn't called that then) over 30 years ago we gave applications away to sell the hardware. It's come full circle now - the h/w, whilst not exactly given away, is quite often sold at a loss - and the apps etc are chargeable updates/upgrades which drives the business. People seem to think that because s/w has no physical manifestation that it is 'worthless'.

Ok Rant over Grrrr
