Just thought I'd let you know how I got on with my TMC (v00.17) over the weekend. We drove down to the West Country and back, about 550 miles all told. I'd say I had reception about 75% of the time but I haven't really had a chance to fiddle with the aerial location much. There doesn't really seem to be a consistent pattern to when you get signal or not - on one section of the M25 for instance I got lock anticlockwise but nothing on the clockwise circuit.

The unit goes into search mode fairly readily - I would have thought that TomTom would have a search algorithm based on the location of the unit - perhaps they will start collecting signal reception info in their anonymous feedback function.

Overall I'm reasonably happy.

I managed to get a signal today at work for a brief 20 seconds then turned the device of. Not good enough really.

Don't get it, atleast I know it works but its useless at the moment as the RDS TMC doesn't lock on and just keeps spinning the orange circle.

So as far as I am concerned this new version doesn't work properly.

Driving from J7 to J9 I just got the searching icon. On the way back on the same stretch , the solid green dot with occasional updates coming through. I guess it's to do with how oblique an angle I was to the local transmitter relative to the car.

Dave,

Did you say version 017????

What is the part number on the label on your receiver?

Thanks

Hmm, Interesting - the label on the box (put on by the shop) says 17. The little tag says 13. Perhaps I should go back and ask for an upgrade.....

Notwithstanding that it does pull in a signal where the radio in my car can't (no earth plane for the aerial).

I recently brought the new RDS TMC from Expansys ( part number 4v00.13).

I live in Weymouth and have yet to receive anything from the device when plugged into my tomtom One XL. All I get is a revolving orange circle.

Anyone have any ideas why I'm not getting a signal. I've left the RDS TMC turned on for a while and tried using the device on the way to work this morning ( which is a 20 minute journey). But I've still had no joy.

I thought the new version of this device had fixed the issue, doesn't seem that way?.

What about resetting my tomtom, may this be of any use or just a waiste of time?

Hi, are you using it with the charger cable plugged in because this seems to introduce interference and knocks out the signal on the OneXL,TomTom have asked me to send the OneXL back so they can check it.I also did a reset which was pointless.

I've tried it in doors with the charger unplugged and the circle just goes around and around.

I don't get it, the journey to work I had no joy, the journey back I had a connection for about 20 seconds (solid green). Wish it would stay connected.

Make sure the software on the device is up to date.

Then make sure the end section of the antenna is vertical (as much of the section between the two plastic bits as possible) at least 2 inches away from the A-pillar. Run the rest of the cable horizontally across the windscreen to your device.

Then wait and cross your fingers - going for a drive might help in case you are in a dead spot. At some point you should get the green circle. Some people recommend going in to the Traffic preferences and setting to United Kingdom instead of Any Country but I haven't noticed a difference between the two.

Where in the country are you?

I live in weymouth (south west dorset).

I get a signal when on portland which is 20 minutes away from Weymouth (joined by a road called chesil beach rd). Portland is higher up than Weymouth and the signal is fine here.

Thinking about it, I got a signal for 100% of the time whilst on Portland (green light was turned on and traffic updates where coming through, I browsed the map and it showed traffic problems aswell). none near Portland but I browsed further and could see events causing delay etc.

I just can't get any signal at all in weymouth (not even for a split second). It just spins orange, around and around.

I wonder if Weymouth is a black spot?. Since testing the RDS TMC i have been all over weymouth with it turned on and nothing happens.

Check out the link below to see my location, as you can see, portland is joined via chesil beach.

Jon, I assume your device is picking up information from the RowRidge transmitter (100,3FM) this is located on the Isle of Wight, and is some 47 miles from you location which is possibly masked by terain, at work the device has a clean line of sight (nigh on) to the transmitter.

RowRidge puts out 250KW so I would expect it to be picked up where you are located if using the -013 receiver, but terain is a good bet as to why you are having local problems. - Mike

Thanks for the reply, I don't understand why I can get it on my radio but not via the RDS TMC device?.

Yeah my device is the .13 version. Wish it worked in Weymouth, bit of a shame really. Is there any way of gaining a signal from weymouth?

Oh and any ideas what the signal is like on the way out past Dorchester (places like Poole, Bournemouth, Southampton etc).

To all of those with x10 models still struggling with reception problems in weaker signal areas, I queried TT as to why a x20 would get a signal in an area where a x10 wouldn't in the same vehicle using the same antenna, and below is their reply:

We believe this difference occurs as the Go 720 uses the Navcore 7 software, but this free application update is not yet available for the Go 510. This should improve the performance of the RDS-TMC receiver, and although we have no specific time of release for this update, we hope that it should be available in the near future. We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this.

With Best Regards

The TomTom Customer Support Team

So, there could be another improvement when this is released.

Useful information, that, Andy. Thanks.

Curiously, travelling exactly the same route today as that I travelled the other day and reported on above, I got a much better result. I've changed/moved nothing. Atmospherics perhaps?

Got a brief lock on the M5 between J7 and J6 Northbound, again on the A449 at Ombersley, again at Hartlebury (where I got one before) and then about 1/2 mile south of Kidderminster.

Isn't it strange how one can be dissappointed to learn there are no traffic issues!!! Smile

Bought a brand new tmc receiver from argos, £34.99 as well!!, but only get green circle for signal approx 50%/25% of the time. So ive fired off a complaint to tomtom as the one ive just bought is the first version and so doesnt work too well. Its version 4V00.000. Is this definately the first version? This is the email i have just sent to tomtom...

I have recently bought a brand new tomtom one 3rd edition regional (uk) and have tried very unsatisfactorily to use the tomtom rds-tmc cable i purchased seperately. As this was an expensive purchase in addition to the actual tomtom unit, i am dissapointed to find that this tmc feature works only approximately 25% of the time i am driving. I read that a new version of the rds-tmc receiver is out now and being supplied by yourselves to customers of problematic tmc receivers. I would like to be sent a replacement receiver so i can start to use a service i have paid for but am still virtually unable to use. I have read all instructions on latest firmware, manual setting of local classic fm stations and full extension of receiver cable and have still obtained unsatisfactory results. The version on the tag of the tmc receiver is "4V00.000" if this helps.

Thanks in anticipation, ****** ***
