Hi
First tme question, probably been asked a hundred times before.
I have a limited budget (£150ish) and would like to know what system would probably be best for me. Choice between TTone GB or Garmin Nuvi 200.
I have no plans to travel outside of the UK. Any thoughts would be great.
Thanks |

The TomTom device has the more intuative menu system and can be readily altered via third party software, it also offers a better (in my opinion) speed camera warning capability when using the Speed Camera Database from this site. - Welcome to the forum by the way - Mike |

Hi Squawk.
I've just been through the choice maze you are experiencing! I had the same requirements, and definately wanted a widescreen.
From the posts on this site I got the impression that the Garmin customer service was very good, and that TomTom were known over a period of years to have a number of niggly faults.
I wanted to navigate to OSGB grid references as well as addresses and again from this site I read that the Nuvi could do this when the TT couldn't.
I then purchased the Garmin Nuvi 200W, £179. I've found it can't infact navigate to grid refs! (See my post in the Garmin forum). The screen, postcode search, directions, speed of recalculation are all excellent, but I wish now I went for the TT XL, seems to be better online resources for it.
If you go for the TT XL Dixon online have it at £159? or one of the high street stores is now doing it at £169.
Good luck, Dan _________________ Garmin Nuvi 200W |

Hi
Just returned from Halfords. After being shown the TTv3 and the Garmin 200 by some chap that looked as though he had come straight from playschool i am even more confused now.
The Garmin comes with static and mobile sites pre-loaded.
The TTv3 comes with no cameras (static or othewise ) pre-loaded at all.
According to variuos websites TTv3 is pre-loaded with static sites and not mobile. How true is this?.
I know i will subscribe to this site soon but i am going on a journey Monday and will not have had time to do so.
Also would it be better to buy TTv2 still available at Argos, same price as TTv3 at Halfords?. Sorry if this is all a bit mundane but i do'nt want to make an exspensive mistake.
Many thanks |

The TomTom is indeed pre-loaded with static speed cameras and you get a voucher in the box for a free update to the latest version, I never used mine though as I don't trust the database they supply upto date or not.
The biggest issue is the version to choose, the One Third Edition has the latest maps installed, so is a good bet, however it is severely hampered by the limited menu on the device which affects Custom POI file usage and denies access to the Itinerary planning option. It is possible to work around this by messing around with the device, but this really shouldn't be necessary - the latest TomTom One (Third Edition) has had a number of complaints over and above the issues I mentioned. To be honest I would be tempted to go with the advice above and get the One XL, it has a fully functional menu system and wide screen, have a read of This and take a look at the picture towards the end of the write up, it will show you the screen size differences between the various units - Mike |

Thanks for all the input Mike. Obviously in your opinion which i respect, the camera database on TTv3 is suspect and whichever unit i buy i will be updating via this site eventually but i just thought that any info on cameras is better than none for my up and coming trip.
Thanks again |

Well as you say, the person who showed you the kit obviously didn't know how to use it or he would have found the fairly comprehensive speed camera data that IS on the TomTom.
It does both fixed and mobile (and redlight cams) BUT I would still say that the PGPSWorld camera database is superior in both functionality and completeness. |
