Have a look at the FAQ post in the sticky threads at the top of this forum index, number 1 details how to make a reliable back up of any TomTom device without recourse to using the ome software (for very valid reasons)Sprite is for use on PDAdevices so it is of no use to you with a TomTom PNA -Mike |

Hi mike
thanks for your reply.
The FAQ were obviously done before 520 and 720 were around i have seen on the forums that home is not the best way to backup bearing in mind I have only just got it , how do I backup using win explorer and not home
thanks

FAQ #1 will take you to This Page which applies to all TomTom devices and does not rely upon using TomTom Home, it will have been written prior to the x20 devices but it will still work - it was the first thing I did when I got my 720 - Mike |

That FAQ relates to ALL TomTom models.
When you connect the unit to your PC, the PC recognises it as a new hard drive/"mass storage device" (or two in the case of models with both SD card slot and Flash memory, but when you buy a model with both Flash memory and SD card slot, the slot is empty, so you can ignore that).
Simply copy the entire contents of the Go to a safe place on the PC hard drive as per the instructions in that FAQ #1. |

hi again
i have finished the backup thanks a lot
however tomtom home is telling me my device code which differs from the code on the back of the tomtom free services leaflet, i am reluctant to confirm it until ive checked, should the code on the leaflet and the code home is offering me be the same? and if they should how can i overcome it. Sorry if it may seem silly but i realise one small wrong assumption can lead to a lot of trouble to resolve

The Device code will be different to that printed on the green "Free Services" leaflet, this difference is quite normal - Mike |

The device code can be found by tapping the sat strength meter on the device, followed by tapping the box labeled "Version" it will be something like "AKWSN ABCDE" it is the top line of text displayed by the device. - Mike |

I might be advantageous to add to the FAQ. That if you have 2 or more HD's on your system, then make sure you store the backup on to the 2nd HD.
If windows goes tits up you can lose everything on the "C" drive, especially if you have to do a reformat on the "C" drive in order to re-install Windows.
Also keep a copy of the My Documents folder on another drive. _________________ Graham.

If I remember correctly when you log in to TomTom My Account there is an option to remove your existing device and then register your new one, at least that is what I did and still retained my email address login details and password. _________________ Graham.

TomTom are basing all their security measures on your account now, so they are very un-keen to allow more than one device to be registered to an e-mail address.
If you want to CHANGE the device registered to an account, they also make that very difficult. It is supposed to be possible after 6 months from the last change, but when I tried to cancel my (fried) Go300 and register my new 720, I had to supply proof of purchase by fax (3 times) and go through lots of hoops, because the first -level techs at TT support do not have the authorisation to make the change either.
It *is* possible if you persevere, but their preferred method is for you to "just" open a new account with a new email address. |
