A couple of days ago I noticed new cameras on Blackheath Hill, London SE10. There are six of them I think, 3 facing in each direction, all mounted on 1 pole. Does anyone know what type of camera they are?? |

Are they like this:
They are ANPR cameras (Automatic Number Plate Recognition), discussed here. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thet do appear similar in design, different coulour though (grey). I have seen this type of camera appearing in London a lot lately. They seem to be cropping up on roads bringing traffic in and out of London.
If they are ANPR's then good, I'm not a terrorist so I have nothing to worry about.

Of course it would be entirely possible for the times you passed two of these cameras to be used to calculate your average speed between say London and Birmingham. Just like SPECS, but over a longer distance.

Not yet, as they would need to be "type approved" to work as speed cams, but it won't be long..... |

I agree, our civil Liberties are a major concern, so to live with terrorists we have to be surrounded with cameras and have all our phone calls recorded - i don't think so.
I also have nothing to hide, but i'm not having some slimy, pathetic, scumbag terrorist, dictating my civil liberties.

The ANPR link does not work, maybe the post is too old.
I entirely agree about the loss of our civil liberties, I think the current govenment will use any excuse to to justify their 'big brother' approach to keeping tabs on everything that we do.
I might be wrong, but, I seem to remeber reading that ANPR's do not record any information, they run your VRM through a database and only flag it up if you have been 'naughty'. |

If they are indeed LEZ cameras then perhaps people can start up submitting the locations to generate a POI file for the benefit of others, these are not speed cameras though so the locations should be submitted via the normal POI submission page Here - Mike |

Cant get my head round this one, can someone explain how overhead gantry sensors can act as exhaust sniffers to read emissions to identify a particular vehicle, if it is database monitored then the existing cameras would do this job, I have not heard of this scheme until now and checked the link to make ascertain whether it was dated Aprl 1st but the whole site seems hard reading, I must admit i havent been to london for over twenty years, will i also need a passport and visa |

I'm sure it will be a ANPR system, being able to tell, from the DVLA, the vehicle classification. _________________ Jock
