Bluetooth GPS receivers are now pretty solid and reliable devices, with SiRF III or MTK chipsets and long battery runtimes. So manufacturers are trying to come up with other USP (unique selling points) that supposedly make one receiver better than all the others.
BuyGPSNow have asked us to review their latest example for that, the WondeX BT-100Y Bluetooth GPS Receiver. It adds A-GPS (assisted GPS) and a motion sensor to the feature list, as well as a 44 channel chipset. Let's see how this receiver compares to the rest of the pack.

On top of removing scuffs from one's jackboots, it can also be used to restore graying plastic parts on your car and to cover up unsightly logos. Provided the surface is black and shiny, that is.
Incidentally, I really did cover up the "Bluetooth GPS" logo on my receiver for exactly the reason stated. No need to advertise the goods. But then again I'm funny that way. I also used black electricians tape to cover up almost all the LEDs that make my desk look like the bridge of a spaceship at night. |

I've just bought a Holux BT441 which is identical in looks and features to the one above. I've been using an older Holux with an XDA2S which worked fine but I thought I'd upgrade to this super duper 44 channel receiver.
The new one works fine for a while but then it looses gps just for a second. When it picks up again it is lagging by about 400 yards! I've emailed them and they sent me some software to flash the firmware, which I can't do without a bluetooth connection on my PC.
I wonder if anyone has come across this symptom before and what could be causing it.

I have heard of that but have never experienced it with my device. What speed are you using? 38400 is supposed to be the most hassle free.

I've a similar model - looks exactly the same however it doesn't offer A-GPS - not that I miss it - the receiver locks on almost immediately and seems to be reliable.
I have however one problem with my model - I use a Nokia N95 (1st edition) and, whilst the receiver works great with TomTom Navigator 6 and another 3rd party piece of software (J2MeMap) none of the pre-installed GPS functions (GPS data, Nokia Maps) recognise the receiver. They do however recognise my old Clip-On BT GPS. I've 2 of the units, both act the same.
I've contacted the supplier and let them know. |

Hi does the flashed Holox 441 work ok. My Holox 441 firmware is
Skytraq kernel version 1.2.16
Skytraq version 1.5.3

I didn't know it was possible to alter the baud rate for bluetooth devices. Anyway, I've got my dongle at last (should've gone to Tescos), flashed the receiver and it's working alot better, cheers.

Hi,
I have the Holox 441 and I'm having problems with the receiver, I updated it to
Skytraq kernel version 1.2.16
Skytraq version 1.5.7
Skytraq revision 2007.8.21
And I'm having problems connecting with my HX4700 and tomtom and with my Imate Jamin using IGO the position seems to stagger "2 steps forward and 1 backwards"
Both are fine with my Emtec reciever.
The download of the 7 day GPS data is fantastic I got a fix within 30 seconds when I went to Germany the other day, that's better than the 15 mins with the Emtec.
Anyone seen this problem?
