I work for one of the large Electrical retailers. I of course get customers coming back with their TomToms with various faults.TomTom usually ask what version firware software does the device have.If the unit in question does not have the latest version the owner is addvised to update it.
A fair proportin of owners are NOT computer literate, and some get quite angry when I addvise them that they need to update the firware & this will cure they problem. (I have sent some units back they come back no fault found addvise customer to update firmware)
I have found it easier to put them on my own pc & update them.
Recently I have run into a problem where there is not enough room on the original sd card to fit the download firmware for upgrade to take place.
It is dificult to explain to the customer that they really need a larger card as space is tight for updates. Try explaining this problem to a customer who is Ms and will not except what I say and thinks I am trying to con her into buying a larger card. Before anybody says I could copy sd card contents on to a temp larger card,do the update & then give them back the old one... its a pain in the derrier as invariably they will come back 3 mths down the road with another problem & history repeats itself.
Has anybody else found that Tomtom has released so many software updates that their sd cards are almost full & wont take anymore?

The TomTom 300 with its 128MB card is like that, I put my bigger card in copied the old card over, did the upgrade and put it on the PC formatted the 128 card and copied the new updates and it worked. they gave my mate his 300 and told him, he will need a bigger card for the next upgrade

Hello,

Not wanting to be argumentative but I was wondering why the retailer would expect the customer to be computer literate? If you buy an electronic device of any kind then you expect it to work out of the box. I certainly wouldn't be happy about having to perform a firmware update on a brand new product especially as this could well have implications on the warranty. I can see it from the customer point of view - "You sold me something that doesn't work/has faults so you replace it, refund or repair it " I happen to be computer literate and fully understand the point you are making but the retailer should not make the presumption that everyone knows about firmware upgrades. If it is firmware issue then I would expect the retailer to perform the necessary upgrade at his sole risk.
Just a thought Wink

I wonder if you can help.

I have just been messing about with my TomTom - I wanted to upgrade the firmware and add additional maps, but the upgrade wouldn't download because there wasn't enough room on the device, I removed the voices to make more room and downloaded the upgrade, but because there wasn't enough room to re-install the voices, I had to remove the POI data that I had downloaded from this site back last February, I did do a backup though but as the data is well out of date I will probably have to re-subscribe anyway so I am not too bothered.

long winded way to get to my query sorry.

I have sent for a 1GB Toshiba SD (secure digital) card - will this be compatible with the TomTom and would I just copy from one card to the other on my laptop?

Many thanks,
Shirley

It does work out of the box. You don't HAVE to do anything with it.
But a good parallel is with ANY computer gear. I had to put a new graphics card in a PC yesterday. It came with drivers on CD, but the first thing you do (and are advised to do) is get on the Net and download the latest ones.

It SHOULD be, so long as the write speed is fast enough (Any "known brand" card these days probably is).

Make sure you have Windows set to show all files and folders (Windows Explorer / Tools menu / Folder options / View tab / Tick 9th box down "Show hidden files and folders")
Copy everything across and it should work first time. You will probably have to get the activation code to link your maps to you machine though.
Get the Device code from machine + Product code of map (from credit card in the box when you got it, or downloaded with it) Add together at www.ttcode.com and get the activation code to be entered on screen if and when the TomTom asks for it.

If the copy DOESN'T work, don't do anything to the TomTom, put your original back in straight away and check that still works. Then we'll try to work out why the copy didn't work....

I have one voice only on my TT why would you possibly want to have lots of different voices available ??

I have a bigger card, but its rediculous that TT sell these units with limited drive space.

Hi again Fartyass,

We seem to have two different threads running here Very Happy I am referring to your original topic posted ie Retailers getting returns on faulty products etc.

In the original post you quite clearly stated "customers returning faulty goods" so from this I understood exactly that - faulty goods. Yes, firmware upgrades are always adviseable so that you get the latest bug fixes (as well as some new bugs). No harm in explaining that to the customer at point of sale but that is a very different thing to dealing with faulty goods as explict in the original post.

Anyhow, I'd be the very first to acknowledge that retailers do get some very difficult/stupid/unreasonable/ignorant people to deal with and more than once I have admired the patience with which these people are dealt with.
