As a bit of a newbie to this game, can you tell me if it's possible to remove the europe map from my TomTom One V3 (remember no SD card) and put another map on it, e.g. a US map for use in the US on a holiday, and then obviously restore the original map, via either windows restore or restoring a TomTom backup on my return?

I think so, you will need to make a FULL WINDOWS EXPLORER backup, not a TomTom HOME, it misses files, and it may be an idea to burn it onto a CD or DVD, as a perminant copy, then download your US map. Remember you will need to download the TomTom softwear too, I think you do that by connecting to TomTom HOME. Keep a record of the activation code for each map, you may need this to activate the maps for the first time. To get the activation codes, go to,
and enter your device code, and your product code.
This is the problem with TomTom's without an SD card slot, I understand they did it to cut down on the cost, but it makes downloading maps realy akward. Here's a guide to doing a windows explorer backup, it talks about SD cards, but yours is on the TomTom hard drive, but the principle is the same. Number 1 here.

I would also contact TomTom about this BEFORE spending any cash on maps of the USA, for a start they need to be below the size of the devices memory capacity, let alone compatible with the software version loaded to the unit, in theory it should work, but I would check it out first - Mike
