pocketgpsworld.comTomTom have today announced the launch of the latest ONE model known as the 3rd Edition.

Available as of today in the United Kingdom and South Western Europe the ONE 3rd Edition features the latest v7 Navigation Software and also comes with a new bargain price.

Looking at the specifications below it's easy to see where the cost savings have been made but few if any of the features that have been dropped would be used by the target audience (Bluetooth connectivity for Buddies and Weather updates) and the removal of the external antenna connector (arguably no longer needed now that GPS Chip-sets are so sensitive).

RRP is set at 199 Euro for the regional model and 249 Euro for the European model. This is a significant reduction on the RRP for the outgoing 2nd Edition (299 Euro for the regional model and 349 Euro for the European model).

Features dropped in the 3rd Edition Model:
Bluetooth (inc access to PLUS Weather and Buddies)
External Antenna Connector
SD Card Slot
TomTom HOME CD (Now Download only)

Features added in the 3rd Edition:
RDS-TMC Connector (of little value in the UK currently)
v7 Features inc Help Me, Map Share, latest Map Guarantee

The regional unit will have 512mb of internal memory and the European version 1GB.

The ONE has always been an excellent device for those wanting the basics of navigation only and none of the changes here will in my opinion affect that. The lack of Bluetooth means TomTom TRAFFIC is not currently an option as RDS-TMC has been withdrawn in the UK until the service quality improves but again, the target market is one that arguably wouldn't be bothering with BT connected mobiles and data calls anyway.

I think that the cost savings have gone a little too far. Lack of TT Traffic (Bluetooth conectivity), even as an option, will certainly deter some people.

Our experience is the opposite. For a large market segment Bluetooth unless it is for hands free is not a requirement at all. Don't forget that a great many potential users don't have or use all singing features such as Bluetooth at all. Hand free is a useful addition but this was never available on the basic ONE's anyway.

Look at this as a re-positioning of the ONE range as entry level devices. If you want Bluetooth and additional features then the ONE XL is a good buy at around £170 and adds wide-screen to the feature list and if you want hands free then the GO 520 is the one you'd need to consider.

Are they sensitive enough to see through the likes of Renault's shielded windscreens? I currently use TomTom on a PDA and that requires an external antenna.

Yes, SiRFIII, Hammerhead, MTK can all manage through athermic coated glass without needing an external antenna.

I think this is brilliant. My own 710 has the the handsfree phone, so I will keep that, but my work uses several of the Tom Tom 1, V2's in a pool, so we all have access. We NEVER use bluetooth connectivity there. We don't even need to have sound on them !! I think for the business market, where the all singing and dancing units features are not often used, this can't be beaten.

For the price, is there anything else comparable in the market ?

It's still IMHO the best budget solution.

Smile a GPS with no signal and out of date maps is about as much use as a phone with no signal and no keypad Smile

im glad to see that people liked my mobile phone photos of the device in this thread

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=58604&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

so that they could make their minds up a few weeks before tom tom even released the news of a new unit!

It's all a bit laughable, the unit has been in the shops for some time and yet we're embargoed from discussing the specs we've been given until today!

Does it not have Traffic updates available, via your bluetooth phone ??

Cannot be used as a phone....that's right.
