Am I missing something obvious with this feature?
Only the first two, repair and hospital show local ones in English. All the others are foreign. Walking 130 miles to a hospital in France isn't much fun if you have a broken leg

When I first got mine it would only show Dentists, Doctors and Chemists over in Ireland (I live in Blackpool) interestingly the Hostpital POI file was accurate for Blackpool - so you must be on the South coast or close to it for it to display French POI.
The reason it does this is down to the built in POI files which at best are described as poor - how to fix the situation:
Simply use the map share function to add POI to the categories that you have, i.e. add the local doctors, then share the POI by connecting to TomTom Home, this way others will benefit from your work and if you choose to accept changes by others you will benefit by their efforts, I have added quite a number of entries to the Blackpool area - so now the device does indicate the nearest POI correctly as I entered the data - Mike |

Yes Mike, near Worthing, Sussex in fact.
That was an interesting fact and intriguing to know how the selection was made. Does that mean these POI's were added on first boot up, and had you bought the one I have, and took it home before switching on, it would show Hospitals in Ireland instead of France? (serious question).

The POi files are installed in the map data, if you use browse map and position the cursor near Blackpool then tap the cursor icon (the third from left at the bottom of the screen) now choose ''Find POI Nearby'' select Doctor and it will list those nearest to your cursor which, if you positioned it over Blackpool will show Ireland Doctors, it wouldn't matter where you are in the country, if my device was at your current location it would show POI in France due to the poor inbuit POI files, as I said earlier add some using the Map Share function to get it to see local places - Mike |
