|

I recently decided to update my GPSMap 76C and City Navigator v6. I read on the Garmin website that MapSource v8 was compatible with both the GPSMap 76C and the 76Cx, so I purchased the MapSource v8 Update while waiting to find a good deal on a Cx.
Two weeks later, after updating the 76C with the v8 MapSource software, I purchased a 76Cx believing I could install the newly updated MapSource v8 data on the 76Cx as well. I intended to uninstall the v8 MapSource software off of the 76C and sell it.
Now Garmin tells me that I need to spend another $70 - $130 on another unlock code for the 76Cx, and that I cannot "transfer" the MapSource unlock code from the 76C to my new 76Cx. I JUST SPENT THAT MUCH TO UNLOCK MY OLD 76C!!! NOW I HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN?
Is this true? If so, why is there no place which explains this to the people purchasing MapSource software?
If this is the case, I'm half tempted to sell off all my Garmin hardware and software, and go with a Lowrance unit. Garmin can kiss my a$$ |

The unlock code is specific to one unit [since June].
It is as far I was aware, clearly documented.
I paid £46 for unlocking CityNavigator v9.
You can always buy the Micro SD cards that are already unlocked and can be transferred to any of the x model Garmins. |

If it was "clearly documented", then I just "clearly missed it".

I've had a little time to cool off and think things thru.
I need to know one thing before I make a decision on how to proceed...
Can map data on a SD card formatted for Lowrance units be copied to a microSD card and used on a Garmin unit? |

The 76cx is a fantastic unit [with its long battery life-interaction with the PC for tracks routes and POIs] how can you begrudge £46 to make it fully functional?
Sell the 76c with your unlocked CityNavigator on it, and re-coup your software charges. [Basically the 76c with only internal memory is very limited with CityNavigator].
Remember MetroGuide is an alternative if you have more than one unit! |
