ProClip TomTom One XL active mount review

If you are a regular reader of our reviews you will know that I am a big fan of the Brodit mounts and holders. Last month I was in Florida and received an email from someone I know who is now working at ProClip in the USA offering me a chance to review the new Brodit TomTom One XL active holder. That was some coincidence as I just happened to be in the USA with my TomTom One XL which I was reviewing at the time.

The next day UPS delivered a ProClip mount for the hire car I was using and the Brodit TomTom One XL holder.

ProClip USA are the North America seller of Brodit products. So all references to ProClip will apply equally to Brodit in Europe.

I'd have liked ONE more picture of the mount itself, though (can't see much detail one the second pic.)
I'm trying to decide whether to get the Brodit swivel mount for the Go720 or whether to wait for the promised active version. I presume it will look very similar to this one for the ONE XL?

Is the TMC module still plugged directly into the unit or does it connect via a passthrough connector on the mount, please? The latter would be much better, IMO (except for the loss of gain).

Excellent review. I am a great fan of Brodit and their attention to detail.
I have been using a Brodit Proclip for about 4 years and it is rock solid. I am currently waiting on a move adaptation to use with my new XL but I have ordered the non active version as IMO it will need some careful handling to fit the unit and successfully mate with the USB terminal.

Also the force required to insert/ remove the RDS-TMC connector would not withstand regular use - something would break, it takes quite a bit of force on a small connector to fully insert it, fix this to the mount and it will fatigue and break given time - Mike

There is no connection on the One XL for external speaker, and as the device can only use Bluetooth for a dataconnection (no hands free on this model) there is no point in a microphone socket - Mike

That said AFAIK the 720 only has a line out connection for the audio, there is no connection on the device to accept an external microphone, you can have a look at what I did for the 720 Here - Mike

Well I bought one for my new car (when it arrives! Rolling Eyes

) and tbh I'm a little disappointed, £41 for two pieces of stuff, the mount wasn't pre-drilled and there were no instructions with the holder.

I'd have thought that for that price (which I think is damned expensive! Shocked

) that the mount would have come pre-drilled, OK, I realise it does take a lot to work out that you have to screw the two together, but it's damned hard to do it, especially if you don't have a very fine drill or access to something such as a Dremel multi-tool.

I'm going to have to wait a few more weeks for the car to arrive to put things to the real test, so I'll let you know how things go when it does & it's fitted.

I suspect the Clips aren't pre-drilled as they can be sued for a variety of purposes not all of which necessitate having holes? For instance many of use Brodit's 'Move' clips which you can see in Mike's review, these are self adhesive and allow the cradle to be removed easily and quickly when needed.

When I have had to attach a cradle using screws in the past I didn't bother pre-drilling, I found using an electric screwdriver it was relatively easy to get one screw to bite which then secured the cradle whilst the others screws were affixed.
