I received a new TomTom One Xl as a gift I used it once to see how it worked then I plugged it in and charged it overnight. The gift giver told me all the cool stuff I could do with it on my computer So I installed the software on my Win XP. Plugged in the TomTom and tried to add a voice to it...nope not enough room. hmmm okay I got a 1.0 GB sandisk with it maybe that would help?....nope. Okay maybe if I delete something on the TT1xl that I don't need..spanish voices or the map of Guam. It said no I can't unless I back it up. I do a back up the file saved says 0 kb. So it didn't save anything? I figure I am never going to Guam and if I do I will buy the map again. So I try to delete it again. It tells me I will have to buy it, I say okay....I try to install a voice again. TT1xl says I have no space. Okay I am frustrated with my new toy and have run out of free time. I unplug it and go to run some errands. I take my TT1XL with me and tell my passenger to turn it on and see how great it is
TT1xl turns on and has no gps ....I think my teen is crazy and I tell him to turn it off and turn it on again?, take the scan disk out?, nope error...turn if off take the disk out and turn it back on?, turn it off and leave it off! Grrr
Now we are back home and I turn it on again to see what is going on....not only is there no signal there is no nothing but a screen with an image of my TT1xl and a big red dot with a white X in it.....nothing in my guide talks about this screen....nothing online talks about this screen....I touch the screen and nothing happens. I plug it into my computer and it's display searches and shows it connects. The software on my computer does not launch. I launch it and it says "There is no compatable TomTom device connected to the computer".
I have tried resetting the unit multiple times no change. I am stuck with a screen that does nothing.
What is wrong with it and can I fix it? What should I do to fix it?

There are two versions of the One XL the first covers regional and is supplied with a TomTom SD card inserted to the SD slot, the second device uses Flash memory to store all the data required leaving the SD card slot devoid of anything - which unit do you have? - Mike |

The quick start guide that came with it says the "SD slot for optional, additional maps" in the diagram. So I am guessing I have the second one you mention.
Thank you for responding |

It is possible that your quick start guide is "multifunctional" - used for either model. If you have a card reader, stick the card in and see if there's anything on it. With some models, putting the card into the slot stops the internal workings.
I'm no good with the One XL I'm afraid, so hang on for Mike - remember there's a big time difference - your answer above came up at midnight here in UK. I know Mike's on a distant job today, so at this moment, probably another 5 or 6 hours from home. _________________ Dennis

Thanks Dennis,
When I put the card in I get an animated image that shows the card being removed and a red x over it. |

Hi, I wanted to follow up on this. I called TomTom and went thru the list of fixes they gave me. In the end they couldn't fix it so they had me send it in for repair. It cost me $10.50 in shipping but they did send me a new one. |
