I am looking for a gps / gps chip that can communicate with a microcontroller. The microcontroller will need the bearing to a way point and the present track direction of the boat. Is this available?

You can get GPS modules fairly easily - just one company in this market is u-blox.

Current bearing is not a problem - though I'm not aware of any of these modules with bearing to a waypoint available, so you may have to calculate that yourself.

The best thing to do is to talk to the companies about what is available and whether they've got any waypoint aware firmware for their products. Interfacing, I understand, is usually RS232 at TTL voltage levels.

I did more or less what you are looking for. I am not sure whether you
want to use a specific microcontroller, but here is what I did: i hooked
a GPS module on a data logger. I can now record directly .kml files to be
used with Google Earth.

Heva a look here:

You can even look one step higher: http://passworld.co.jp/ForumMSP430/
because I will post updates soon.

The advantage is that if you know more or less how to program a
microcontroller, you can customize the exact behavior you want.

As for the characteristics, most are on the above site. Please contact
me if you want some more detail.
