Yes, have one. Personally I prefer something like the GATSO database driven GPS's. The Bel Euro 550 like most radar detectors won't detect Truvello cameras, the laser alerts are so sensative they go off driving down the high street or under motorway bridges which have IR transmitters, they're good for standard GATSO's though. |

Hi David,
I see that you’re based in Scotland. I don’t know what your local Police use, but if they do use radar as opposed to laser, for mobile traps, then you won’t go wrong with a Bel Euro 550. The Bel should give you the least number of false positives of all radar detectors, with the greatest range. If you want a radar detector then I’d thoroughly recommend it. Coupled with the free PocketGPS World camera database for fixed camera sites then you’re laughing.
I don’t know how much you know about radar detectors, but don’t buy one just for the laser detection, this is because 9 times out 10, by the time you’ve been alerted, your speed will have already been checked.

I have a Bel 990i which is the model before the Euro550. They are very good units, probably some of the best on the market. A key feature is that you can switch off the noisy X-Band detection (all bands are selectable) which cuts out the vast majority of false alerts.
However, in the UK you would probably be better off with a location based GPS system and a LASER jammer.
The other thing to remember is that a RADAR detector is no good against SPECS, Truvelo or VASCAR. If you get targeted directly by a LASER then you are nicked before you have a chance to react but there is a chance that you may get an alert from the Police targeting a vehicle in front of you. Personally, I think the LASER alerting feature is oversold.
